I ain't a phone person whatsoever., butT ... I opened a bank account with Mc/Visa logo, so I can use it online. First, I had to purchase small device through which I confirmed I submitted and I agree with the purchase online. It cost me 30 EUR ... Now, a month or so later, banker told me, we (my bank) must comply with the new EU banking rules and ... I must either have smart phone or Windows OS on my laptop for the purchase confirmation. Since, I've never used Windows OS, I had to purchase a smart phone.

I entered the fancy store with only iPhones in display window.

I go: "I need a smart phone. I want to know which is the cheapest smart phone in yer store ..."

Retail: "We have one for 30 EUR ..."

I replied: "If it's smart, I'll take it!"

Then, I explained to him, I need phone only to confirm purchase over the web. Bank's requirement ...

It was cheap deal and I am still happy. Phone is on the charger, turned off ... bastard!

It wasn't made in China ... I forgot, but I think it's Swedish or Norwegian ... made.

If you like hilarious smartphone news google the bumbling jihadi.

He's a Kiwi who went to join Isis in Syria. He was a bit of an attention junkie so was tweeting and sending selfies from his phone... with the location function turned on.

I don't remember the exact details but I think he got them drone struck a couple of times before they realised he was advertising their position.

A lot of the foreigners who ran off to join Isis learned the hard way they'd backed the wrong team.

The Kiwi made a big deal of burning his passport online, encouraged people living in NZ to attack the police and complained about wanting a good looking sex slave but only being able to afford an old woman. And then Isis got beaten and he wanted to come home... but he'd burned his passport. He appealed for the govt to help him and pretty much everyone in NZ said hell no!

The government said that if he showed up on a plane we have to accept him by international law but he'd need to get out of prison in Syria, make his way to the nearest NZ embassy in Turkey, apply for and pay for a new passport then buy a plane ticket home and he wouldn't be getting any help at all doing that.

OP: ... butT ... did you know, 'anyone' is a sin.?

It refers to one person in de group ...

You learn some gra-mm-mar and I get more raincoasts ... it's a fair deal ... surprise

icnif77:

The other comment is too long already, so let me reply here @Stiggs ... I don't know about escaping Syrian jail, but matters on Syrian Turkish border aren't too bad/weren't too bad some 2-years ago.

I was there after the visit to Gaziantep and Gobekli Tepe. I didn't cross the border into Syria, but just on the Turkish border everything was in siesta-time. Very hot and humid, so not too many people were outside. Silence in the air without any shelling or loud gun fire sounds, nor too many Migs in the air either.

If you wouldn't read the news, you couldn't tell anything in vicinity is going on there.

Turkey and Istanbul especially are stuffed with Syrians, most of whom are refugees, so crossing the border into Turkey can't be too big deal.

Now the thingy with NZ-er is "Where is he gonna go?".

I am sure, NZ-ers need visa for any country in that part of Mesopotamia. You might have 90-days visa free stay in Turkey and that's it. Schengen zone the same most likely. You can't enter the Vlad-istan (Russia) without visa.

My advice would be, return to the first NZ Embassy, apologize and politely ask for the new passport for return to Auckland.

He could maybe avoid all that, if he would claim at Embassy he's very sick ... I mean, he really needs a psychiatric help with medications prescribed... IMO.

Crossing the border might be doable without a passport but getting there was apparantly an issue at the time - there was a lot of fighting etc going on between where he was and the border and as an Isis fighter he would have been a target for everyone, he was half starved and weak from being in a prison for terrorists, he would have had to walk a long way to get there.

Once there he might have needed to I.D to get a replacement passport, he probably would have needed money to pay for it as well as a flight out of the country. Oh, and he was part of a known terrorist organisation so that would also be a factor when trying to travel.

There was a follow up to his story a year or so ago, I don't think anyone knows for sure but he's very likely dead now and if he isn't his chances aren't good.

I read few days ago, his mission was martyrdom in the end ... This one from 2019 ...

https://southfront.org/kiwi-bumbling-jihadi-surrendered-to-sdf-because-life-as-isis-member-had-become-unbearable-couldnt-afford-slave/

It says, NZ gov. cannot strip any NZ-er of citizenship, but he'll have to make his own way to the nearest NZ Embassy ...

I don't think, ID is required for the new passport in such occasions. Gov. can identify/match him by the fingerprints ... or just by his photo.

NZ gov. (or any other gov.) must take such people back home, "... so they won't commit atrocities against someone else ..." at the latest news on BJ-di.

Yep. Like I said before, if he shows up at Auckland International NZ has to accept him, he's a citizen.

Nobody suggested stripping him of his citizenship, there's an international law - or maybe just a protocol or agreement, not sure - that says no country can make a citizen stateless. The only way they could take his citizenship is if he had dual citizenship in another country, and he doesn't.

But there's nothing  to say they had to break him out of prison and fly him home and that's what the government said. If he shows up at the border he'll be accepted (and probably thrown in prison) but he'll get no help getting there.

No, far away from working on his release from the jail or supporting him anyhow. NZ's gov. response was right ...

If I'd be in his shoes ( ... not in a million years), but ... as an advice, his best bet would be to plead insanity (from which he isn't too far away ...) or some major sickness and ask for help once he gets close to the NZ Embassy.

They might deport him from Syria straight to NZ 'cause he was arrested by the US sponsored/supported Syrian forces.

The thingy I read, NZ gov. (or any other terrorist's domestic country) should take him back after the jail release, so he won't cause the harm to other nations. That's kind of international obligation, he he, i.e. nutter is yours, no choice.

I heard the term 'Bubbling J ...' earlier, but I didn't pay attention to it until you mention it.

Remember "Up-Yours" in September 2013?

USA cancelled his passport and he couldn't go to S. America and then Vlad opened the doors ... so much for the protocol, he he

He got a mention in the news the other day. NZ is accepting a Kiwi Isis bride and her two kids after they showed up in Turkey, no choice probably. The guy, Mark Taylor is still in prison in Syria, apparently still alive.

I am saying, Taylor will get free ride to NZ after he finishes his jail time. He won't be released as a free man at the end of the sentence, so he can see Turkey ...

I'd say, it depends on what charges he's in Syrian jail. If on terrorist charges (what is most likely ..). he'll be escorted back to NZ at the end of the sentence. That's is a part of the code in International law.

If terrorist is released freely after the sentence, he/she can 'cause damage to the other countries ..., so home country must take/accept him/her.

That statement is straight from the International law. I read it at one of the links I posted here about Taylor and Syria.
