I know it's irrational but I have to say, I did consider it. Was a little edgier than usual. And then it got so effing packed that I then started being concerned about being crushed to death...

Don't worry, statistically, you have more chance to be hurt in a traffic accident. It's one of the top violent death cause in China. Keep looking for the odd e-bike or car on the walkway. Drive as if anything in your field of vision can happen. People going postal with knifes is not common, it's exceptional.
O-Watson:
I hear you on that! But no problem being a little prepared/aware ey?!
DrMonkey:
To be prepared to a knife attack, I would suggest some self-defense class (I heard great things about Krav Maga) and intensive training for a year or two. A softer alternative can be running practice and/or parkour. Short of this, holding your backpack tighter and looking spooked is unlikely to block knifes ^^
Which city are you taking the subway in?
ironman510:
Never tried the Beijing subway but I've heard rumors about the nightmare mornings.
i have experienced the Beijing underground at rush hour.
not pleasant.
i keep my personal belongings safe and my face set on 'stun' to discourage gropers and -pick-pockets.
i sometimes go back a couple of stops in order to get a better location on the train i want to take.
Robk:
Yeah see, that's the smart choice.
Instead of rushing on like your life depends on it, then being crammed like a sardine can... wait a little then go on a car that looks a little emptier.

After about a yr I have finally managed to zone out of my daily commute. I just read my book and go to zen like place.....However, this is only for my daily commute to work, when getting anywhere is basically just muscle memory. If I unexpectedly find myself on the subway during rush hour going somewhere new, I quickly become a quivering wreck.
The key is to be as calm as possible. No need to run - the beauty of undergrounds is that the next train is only a few minutes away. I feel like people forget this every morning.

Ya, I've tried waiting for the next train but by the time it comes there is an entire queue of new people waiting to get on and then it's cramped again. I've now started pushing people out the door when they try come on and it's too full. They always think there is space for just. one. more.....
I thought about it for a second and then decided that there isn't much I can or could do about it..
Nai, I've been picked up, as everyday, by the car, which is using red letter+black number on white background on reg. plate ...
