Q: Can I apply for an M visa in Hong Kong despite never having an M visa before?

Hi, so I'm in China right now on an X2 Visa which will expire halfway through the next month. I have to come back to visit a trade show and attend a factory for a company I managed to get a job in (it's a HK registered company). I have an invitation letter from a company inviting me (a Chinese company, a subsidiary of a European company). My plan was to go down to Hong Kong this month before my X2 expires and apply for the M visa. However, I read online that they won't give you the M visa unless you already have it in your passport if you're just a visitor to Hong Kong. Is that true? And if not what documents do I need? I originally only thought that the invitation letter would be enough, but do I need something more?

I'm not sure about M visa, but you can look at M visa requirements on HK Embassy website.

At Z visa HK pick-up, Invitation letter must state, you'll pick it up in HK, then it is possible. I just returned from HK with new Z.

My understanding is that you will need a HK ID card to get an L or M visa for more than 1 months validity. Otherwise it's back to your home country.

But again, this seems to depend. I have one foreign friend who went to HK for an M and the best he could get was 2 weeks. Another foreign friend got a year with 30 days per visit.

It seems to depend a lot on what visas you already have in your passport. If you have lots of L and F and X visas, with lots of time in China, it does not look good.

If you have a new passport with just one visa it looks better.

I suggest you contact one of the agencies in HK and arrange it through them.

Where did you read about needing a previous M visa?  Link?

But remember.... if you will be working here full time you will need a Z visa.

Yes, I remember when I was searching for solution to  M visa issue and I found completely the same i.e. M visa cannot be issued in HK unless you have M visa in your passport but I highly recommend to check it with visa agency, here is the link of the agency which nearly everyone uses: http://www.fbt-chinavisa.com.hk/contact.html

A: No, it's not allowed to work under RP at 2nd job! I'd say, Z visa
A:No, it's not allowed to work under RP at 2nd job! I'd say, Z visa/RP sponsor can have an objections to your part-time job. I did the same at my English teaching in China and elsewhere, butT ... I casually mentioned at my prime job, some kindergarten or another school asked me to work with them part-time. Then, my Q: "Is that permitted?" ...  Answer from RP sponsor was always "Yes, but you can't be late or miss the classes at our school ..." with my reply: "No, our work schedule has a priority, and I'll arrange classes at kindergarten only in my free time." When I cleared that, I was undertaking any extra teaching hours at other schools and private students in my free time.Sometimes, teachers at my prime job asked me if I'm willing to have some extra classes elsewhere.I accepted after the talk with School's principal. I suggest, you test the felling at your Z/RP sponsor and once you see they don't object, you can work at 2nd job. Keeping your 2nd job as a secret from your employer won't work, 'cause you're laowai and Chinese know exactly what you do in your free time. However, despite your employer's agreement for extra work, you are still in violation of Chinese Labour law, and even if your sponsor agrees to your extra work, you can still get in trouble, because it's clearly written (somewhere ... ) that under Z/WP, one can work only at the Z-sponsor and nowhere else. Penalties ... I'd say, there won't be any warnings and you'll be required to exit China in short Exit time.It never happened to me, so I can't really advice how is when manure hits the fan ...  -- icnif77
