Q: Could Shenzhen and Hong Kong ever merge into one city?
Their business is pretty much entirely connected...Hong Kong entrepreneurs have their factories in Shenzhen, and the city is like a croissant around Hong Kong...

I think eventually the mainland government will collapse, and perhaps Hong Kong and Taiwan, as the two developed Chinese countries, could be central to the reformation of a united China. Under such a scenario, I suppose it is possible that Hong Kong could absorb Shenzhen, and maybe even other cities, for their own good.
After the 50years have ended in Hong Kong and Macau who knows what will happen. To me development in the pearl delta area is booming and could be a sign of preparing for the future.
The 50years I am refering to is China is not allowed to interfere in any way (even though it does) with Macau and Hong Kong laws, way of life, and polcies.
shenzhen was china trying to prove they can make a hong kong as good as the british to the world, saving face , different laws in shenzhen than other mainland areas to help accomodate this utopian dream. history will tell the tale
With the chinese way ? Cut trees, flating the hills down and build skyscrapers ? I wish and hope never happen 
If the two ever merged it would be a decent analogy to ask South Koreans whether they want to merge with North Koreans. Seriously, ask some; you'll figure out their opinions real quick. I had a history professor tell me that reunification was inevitable, to which the South Koreans in the room immediately chortled.
