Q: Criminal background check UK - DBS or ACRO?
Do any UK expats know if a basic DBS check will be okay rather than an ACRO check (which shows past offences through 'no live trace')? If you submitted the former certificate please share in which province this was accepted. Thanks.

For those in Scotland, a standard Disclosure Scotland criminal record check is acceptable along with an apostille from a chartered solicitor. I moved from Glasgow to Qingdao in 2024 thanks to this. Much faster than the painfully slow ACRO process.

It was accepted when applying for the work permit for my new company. ... Only the employer can apply for DBS checks, not the job applicant. If the employer is based in China, DBS won't deliver the certificate. DBS do not send certificates beyond UK commonwealth and EU borders.

All this should be illegal, if you are innocent until proven guilty then you should never have to prove your innocence in any other context. It should be presumed as a human right. Character references might serve this function adequately.

If you are innocent until proven guilty in a court of law, you should never have to prove you don't have a criminal record.

You have to prove non-criminal history to be able to secure Z (Working) visa and RP later on ... no different than in the most countries around the world.
I've worked as an E.T. in Russia, Armenia and Turkey beside China and every country has the same requirement, i. e. "... watch-for-the-pedos drive ...", since E.T.s work in majority of times with underage students.
