What foreign cuisines do you think taste better here or are less expensive than in your home country?
I can't claim to have tried Japanese or Korean back home but I don't recall them being particularly popular...here though they're great! Also Iranian/Persian cuisine - a couple of good restaurants in Beijing.
Nope.
Oh, actually, there was one great Mediterranean restaurant. I don't think it was better than home, but it was cheaper.
None. I actually miss the really bad Chinese buffets from back home. It's hard to find a decent loaf of bread so I'm not even going to comment on anything else.
Less expensive? Pretty much anything.
Better? Nothing.
I'm Portuguese, and used to eat Mediterranean food like pasta (I miss you so much, Lasagna). Pasta is thick and usually overcooked. Rice, a national dish, is usually pretty bland... Well, there's seafood... not necessarily better, but definitely a lot cheaper.
Potatoes are rarely used here, I've been here for almost 1 year and I don't remember eating potatoes outside KFC/McDonalds (fries).
I was surprised with a Japanese dish in a restaurant in Hong Kong though... But then again, Japanese restaurants in my country aren't exactly the best thing there is.
I've found some Japanese restaurants that are better here, mainly the sushi
Had some good sushi, some very good Korean BBQ and some pretty nice Vietnamese food. But I must say the quality of western style food increases dramatically by going to other big Asian cities such as Singapore, Kuala Lumpur or Seoul, of course the price goes up too.
It is my favorite thing about McD. No matter where in the world you are, if you think "I could have a burger right now", then before you eat it, you already know exactly how disappointed you will be afterwards.
cooter:
I dunno man. A quarter (sometimes a half...) pounder with fries and coke has hit the spot for me many a time in the US. It's not the same here....although the fries and chicken nuggets are pretty close. Admittedly, I've never set foot in a McD's in any other country besides the US and China.
Scandinavian:
around Europe they are pretty consistent. the coke varies a bit from country to country but other than that it's the same old horsemeat everywhere
Bacon in China was really good. There was one particular brand that was a great mix of Western and European style bacon.
None, only Chinese cuisine tastes better here
nevermind:
I find the Chinese food at home is better. Course I'm in Vancouver so it's authentic only made without gutter oil and made with fresh ingredients, which I'm sure makes all the difference.
Nothing at all from any other country tastes remotely as good here as the original does. Nothing.
Restaurants in China just never quite get it right when it comes to foreign food.
GuilinRaf:
My first p pizza in Guilin: The cheese was not melted, the meat and ingredients were not cooked together on the crust (they were added in front of me, like a sandwich) and the veggies included corn and carrots....
I'm sorry I love China but 'foreign' food in China better than the original? Sorry, don't tell my wife, but China cannot even do Kimchi let alone Sushi or Steak and Kidney pie, and as for kebabs!!!!
MissA:
Xinjiang kebabs are awesome! Different from a greasy UK takeaway, granted....
