I can only access Yahoo mail in USA in the mornings early,  The rest of the time I can not.  Sometimes I do access Google, and type Yahoo Mail, and then click on Yahoo Mail sign in and that works when direct sign in does not.  Maybe you could try the same with gmail.

LAR:

HiHappyExpat,

I've been having the same problem with Yahoo.com. It's been very hard for me to access my e-mail the last few days! :( VERY frustrating!! :( Only at certain times can I read my e-mail. :( I never had this problem with Yahoo.com before. * "G-mail is on a hit list." * What does that mean? * Why?

* That must explain why lately I haven't been able to read the gmail that's been sent to me by a Chinese gal that I know. :( Bollacks!

If they are not working well I suggest that you have enough apple product at your disposal to trade for two girlfriends.

It may just be that the internet source you are using blocks or slows down certain things beyond the GFW.

It was actually down for two days in some parts of China. Two days ago, Google changed its search engine functions to include a warning that some search terms might lead you to blocked websites in China. My guess is that the gov. didn't like that very much.

It's slow but it's not down! I had problem with some of the functions on gmail such as gtalk. As far as reading email and sending email out it hasn't been much of a problem for me.

If you have Gmail and want consistent (24/7) access to it, then a VPN is a necessity. OTW, access will be sporadic at best. Gmail is on China's hit list.

Gmail had a problem over the last couple of days that knocked out service for about 4 million accounts.  You were probably one of those 4 million.  The problem was fixed within 24 hours.

If you are using the chrome web browser, that could be the problem. I was using chrome when I first came to China. Google has some special chrome-gmail integration that is broken here in China. Gmail works fine for me under firefox. The only problem is sometimes I can't download attachments.

Chinese gov't hates chrome for some reason. Probably because of chrome gathering data for google.

Answer of the DayMORE >>
A: No, it's not allowed to work under RP at 2nd job! I'd say, Z visa
A:No, it's not allowed to work under RP at 2nd job! I'd say, Z visa/RP sponsor can have an objections to your part-time job. I did the same at my English teaching in China and elsewhere, butT ... I casually mentioned at my prime job, some kindergarten or another school asked me to work with them part-time. Then, my Q: "Is that permitted?" ...  Answer from RP sponsor was always "Yes, but you can't be late or miss the classes at our school ..." with my reply: "No, our work schedule has a priority, and I'll arrange classes at kindergarten only in my free time." When I cleared that, I was undertaking any extra teaching hours at other schools and private students in my free time.Sometimes, teachers at my prime job asked me if I'm willing to have some extra classes elsewhere.I accepted after the talk with School's principal. I suggest, you test the felling at your Z/RP sponsor and once you see they don't object, you can work at 2nd job. Keeping your 2nd job as a secret from your employer won't work, 'cause you're laowai and Chinese know exactly what you do in your free time. However, despite your employer's agreement for extra work, you are still in violation of Chinese Labour law, and even if your sponsor agrees to your extra work, you can still get in trouble, because it's clearly written (somewhere ... ) that under Z/WP, one can work only at the Z-sponsor and nowhere else. Penalties ... I'd say, there won't be any warnings and you'll be required to exit China in short Exit time.It never happened to me, so I can't really advice how is when manure hits the fan ...  -- icnif77
