Q: Going to the movies. Worth it?

If restaurants and buses and anything to go by, I just know that watching a movie in China is going to severely piss me off. I love going to the cinema and haven't been since coming out East. Are the stories about ringing phone, loud conversations and general bad manners true?

Worth it? Often.

I have been to the movies in Shanghai, Suzhou and Guangzhou.

In most of the cinemas there were a lot talk and ringing phones sometimes, but only in Guangzhou it pissed me off bad. The guy just kept talking during the movie.

It seems like there are less talk in expensive cinemas.

Some cinemas are also visited more by foreigners than others, try them.

In my experience the stories are 100% true (cell phones, full volume conversations, coming and going during the movie, etc etc).  So to answer your question, it is definitely worth going to the movies at least once just so you can have the experience and tell the story later.

Actually, Cinemas are the only place where I've seen them behave somewhat properly. It's like an hour and a half of people acting like a functioning society.

The cinema I go is in a gigantic luxury mall and, perhaps for that, always empty. Most of the time my boyfriend and I are all alone watching movies. Great!

Except that one time when we watched a horror movie and a cleaner suddenly appeared on my side and scared the crap out of me...

I've been to the pictures plenty of times. Only been pissed off a few. Same as anywhere else to my mind.

Every country has it's arrogant big-mouthed arseholes. Mine not so many though. Not since I left at least.

So am I.   I think it's this multiple personality thing, I don't know who I am anymore.   But I will keep plodding on.   Still got plenty of mirrors.   I do enjoy your banter, more power to your elbow.   Perhaps we will meet one day for a pint,  or two.

Anytime man, i'll bring the whiskey, although seeing as you and me are the same person you could grab one of those mirrors and we can meet for a drink now.

I've been a fair few times, the atmosphere in a cinema is always better to home or online. Surprisingly I haven't found as many asshats in there as I would expect. A fair few phones on but mainly texting and nothing loud or boisterous. So yeah, I enjoy it.

I had a good experience, would I keep spending that kind of money? No.  Once in a while? meh, maybe.

A:No, it's not allowed to work under RP at 2nd job! I'd say, Z visa/RP sponsor can have an objections to your part-time job. I did the same at my English teaching in China and elsewhere, butT ... I casually mentioned at my prime job, some kindergarten or another school asked me to work with them part-time. Then, my Q: "Is that permitted?" ...  Answer from RP sponsor was always "Yes, but you can't be late or miss the classes at our school ..." with my reply: "No, our work schedule has a priority, and I'll arrange classes at kindergarten only in my free time." When I cleared that, I was undertaking any extra teaching hours at other schools and private students in my free time.Sometimes, teachers at my prime job asked me if I'm willing to have some extra classes elsewhere.I accepted after the talk with School's principal. I suggest, you test the felling at your Z/RP sponsor and once you see they don't object, you can work at 2nd job. Keeping your 2nd job as a secret from your employer won't work, 'cause you're laowai and Chinese know exactly what you do in your free time. However, despite your employer's agreement for extra work, you are still in violation of Chinese Labour law, and even if your sponsor agrees to your extra work, you can still get in trouble, because it's clearly written (somewhere ... ) that under Z/WP, one can work only at the Z-sponsor and nowhere else. Penalties ... I'd say, there won't be any warnings and you'll be required to exit China in short Exit time.It never happened to me, so I can't really advice how is when manure hits the fan ...  -- icnif77
