This is a bit mean, but the vast majority of the people who were working at training centers were "white-monkey" edutainers.

Not teachers, so...  No.

Exactly. I would say the rise and existence of the Chinese market has contributed to a glut of sloppy and infantile Westerners who dance like monkeys, do the bare minimum, and expect a middle class income for it. I am not sorry to see them gone.

I teach online since returning to the USA. All of the social media forums have been littered with posts of the following nature since I started: "Hi, I am a person who decided that teaching ESL online is an easy way to make a lot of money. I have my $20 one day Groupon TEFL certificate and no related degree, experience to the field in any way, or interest aside from the fact that a Google artlice told me this was an easy way to make a buck. Who is hiring?"

I have always informed people that if their idea of a job search is to hop on to FB or reddit and ask "durrr, who is hiring?," then they clearly don't deserve jobs. I'm honestly glad the Chinese toilet flushed and is sucking them out. Teacher forums can be about teaching now, and less about dipshits who won't even do their own market research.

Every laowai teacher must have a visa/RP for work in China, which is usually sponsored by the employer/Training mill, so by closing of the mills in China, there cannot be any oversupply of foreign teachers ...

Remember, first you must get a job and after that visa for the entry to China ...

Stiggs:

"after that visa for the entry to China ... "

That's not even happening now, the gates are closed unless you already have an RP.

I'm not looking for a job in China but I still get notifications all the time, 'urgently need teachers in (city), must be currently in China.'

Don't teachers get a grace period to find new job and transfer their work permit to new employer?

Grace period to change an employer used to be 30-days, but it gets shorter and shorter.

That's what I wanted to say @Stiggs ... you can't get visa, if you don't get new employer first, who'll sponsor it. Now, if Training mills are closed, there's nobody left to sponsor anything.

... or in Pytagorean words, 1 + 1 = 2

You'll see the similar/same notice in many countries, especially in S. Asia. It means, there are restrictions at the enter-the-country ... Such notice is there since the start of the pandemic.

Well in theory places like universities and international schools could still sponsor you but with the borders closed that's probably not happening either.

Oh well, if the covid situation ever resolves itself schools in Korea, Taiwan, Japan etc will have a lot of experienced applicants to choose from so it'll be great for them.

I'd say, hiring of laowai English teachers in China was stopped on the higher level than only at the employers.

Employers must ask .gov to approve many documents for foreigners to obtain the entry visa ...

Everywhere around the world, employers are looking for the native English teachers, so Chinese prohibitions shouldn't impact anybody with the native English passport.

English teaching world is wide open ... for the right countries passport holders.

Stiggs:

Yeah, for sure it's higher up than the employers.

Parents still want English teachers, employers still want English teachers, presumably kids are still going to want to go abroad to study so they'll want English teachers, it's just the govt that seems to have decided they don't want English teachers.

The people I know who left China when the pandemic started but were planning on returning are mostly shrugging their shoulders and saying oh well, there are plenty of other countries to go to and they have internet you're allowed to use there, less pollution etc so...

China's loss will be other's gain.

So, assuming the grace period, and assuming within-country situation for most of the currently laid off foreign teachers at hundreds/thousands of training schools - it seems reasonable to infer that many/most of them will probably migrate to: public, private, int'l. and/or universitiies. So, in short to medium term, it would be reasonable that such "over supply" of teachers will put downward pressure on teaching salaries.

No!

... 'cause once foreigner loses employment in China, she/he cannot stay in China anymore because Permit to Stay/RP ends in the same time, so China cannot have oversupply of laowai teachers because all laowai who lost the job have/had to exit China ... or as Pythagoras would say, 1 + 1 = 2

Granted extension of RP at the job ending (or changing RP sponsor, i.e. new employer ..) in China purpose is preparation for the exit and 2nd as finding of a new employer without the exit requirement and applying for new Z visa abroad.

In other words, with 30-days RP extension one must either exit or find new employer in that term.

These are only two choices with 30-days RP extension grant.

It is a possibility I would certainly have in mind, if I would be a native English passport holder.

I remember reading about her, she had dual citizenship - UK / Bangladesh I think and the UK disowned her first so now she's stuck with only Bangladeshi citizenship.

I think she was even saying a couple of years ago she hadn't lost her extremist beliefs, she just wanted to be looked after in comfort back in the UK. I don't think she's very bright.

Nothing in above replies/comments negates my soft claim: 30 day grace period allows hundreds of newly-laid off teachers, within China, to find new employemnt - I don't see that as being either overly onerous nor impossilbe - and thus put downward pressure on salaries.

You have never worked in China under Residence permit, i.e. once you have 30-days extension, you are ready to exit unless you secured new employer before that and you'll use 30-days extension to swiftly move into the new employer's city 'cause time is of essence when you are changing the employers.

Not too many English teachers in China had new employer 'cause limits toward the English teaching in China came instantly and as a surprise.

Choice newly laid off teachers have is to find another employer ... There are no new employers 'cause most of the schools remain closed and school which are still open have the restrictions placed at hiring of the laowai English teachers.

Now, you are telling us, real Q of yer thread was

"How many native English teachers are jobless still in China using 720 hours of RP extension time?"

Most likely none 'cause they've all exited China ...

Most foreign English teachers come to China for work and if no work, they will exit and return home. I know, I would!

You get a 30 day humanitarian visa, during which you have 30 to find a new employer to start the paperwork process.

Public schools and universities are hiring like crazy right now, so finding a job for someone who is qualified should not be difficult.

I was speaking out of my own experience ... as non-native English teacher. It was difficult to look for and change an employer in 30-days RP extension time. I usually had new job lined up way before that. Few times happened, I had to exit China to HK and look for the new employer from there.

If Public schools are still hiring then the recent limitations applied only at the Training mills. In my time, I worked at the Training mill only at my first job in China in 2009 and after that, I was always applying/working only at the Public schools.

It seems as if there are still more jobs than available employees even after the closures.....

More laowai English teachers will move elsewhere ...

Harvard language program relocates from China to Taiwan

Wed, October 13, 2021, 11:49 AM

TAIPEI, Taiwan (AP) — An intensive summer language program hosted by Harvard University in Beijing will relocate to Taiwan in summer of 2022, as the U.S.-China relationship remains strained.

The program is moving to Taipei and will kick off next summer with about 60 students who will take eight weeks of classes, National Taiwan University confirmed Wednesday.

The decision was in part “due to a perceived lack of friendliness from the host institution" in Beijing, according to Harvard's student paper the Crimson, which first reported the move.

Every summer, according to the Crimson, the program “would typically host a small party to celebrate the Fourth of July, during which students and faculty would eat pizza and sing the national anthem.” But in 2019, the host university, Beijing Language and Culture University, said it could no longer host the event, Program Director Jennifer L. Liu told the paper.

.. so, price for a foreign English teacher should increase ... in China.

Remaining foreign English teachers in China should demand pay raise ....

Due to the borders being closed the answer is, not yet.  Once the borders open up I think is is very likely there will be an oversupply of teachers.

Finding an employer, who'll apply for an Invitation letter; 2. Exit China and apply for Z visa in your home country's Chinese embassy; 3. Enter China in 30-days after Z visa was stamped into your travelling instrument ...As I am aware, you won't be able to switch to Working permit by remaining in China....,so make ready for a return to your home .... -- icnif77
