Q: How common are fake degrees in China?

I just read about a prof at one of the top universities in China using a fake doctorate for 20 years.

How common is this?

What about among expats?

I used to work with a British guy who had a fake MA in history. Stupid thing to do because he actually had a real BA, but he wanted the "prestige" of having a MA. He got caught after the school hired someone who was actually at that school in that program when he claimed to have been there.  Fake MA got fired and black-balled.

Among expats?

Here are the requirements for Chinese Z visa implemented at Chinese Labor law novelty in June, 2017:

Z Visa Timeline

Getting the Z visa itself is not a lengthy process and it normally only takes 3 - 7 business days for your application to be processed.

However, the length of the whole process, which starts from getting the necessary documents, i.e. scanned copy of college degree, Non-criminal record and more ... notarized all the way to actually getting your residence permit, depends on several variables and could end up taking a couple of months.

Here’s how long each individual step to becoming a Chinese resident usually takes:

Getting your documents notarized– around 3-4 weeks broken heart

Spiderboenz:

There are regularly recruiters posting in job groups about fake degree notarization. Apparently certain unscrupulous for-profit “universities” partner with them, so it’s possible. Insanely expensive though.

I found a weblink of ...:

Chinese national, Peking University professor accused of faking doctoral degree and work experience

https://news.yahoo.com/prominent-peking-university-professor-accused-234...

The professor, 58-year-old Chen Chunhua, is being questioned after it was discovered that her doctoral degree was issued by an unlicensed university 21 years ago. Chen stated in her professional biography that she received her doctorate of business administration from the European University of Ireland in 2001, reported South China Morning Post.

A: "... through ..."?  Only "through" comes to mind is 'Shenzhen agent can connect you with an employer, who's authorized to hire waigouren ... and can sponsor Z visa." It's not like every 10th person you meet in Shenzhen's hood can sponsor work visa ...  The only way to change from student to labourer visa is just a regular way by: 1. Finding an employer; 2. Employer applies for an Invitation letter; 3. Exit China and apply for Z visa in your home country's Chinese embassy ...As I am aware, you won't be able to switch to Working permit by remaining in China....,so make ready for a return to your home .... -- icnif77
