Q: How do you do this mythical tax claim when leaving China?

Yeah, yeah - laugh away.  But when leaving China how are you supposed to go about claiming back some of the taxes you've paid for years?  I mean I'd at least like a cookie.

Isn't it only tax refund for goods purchased, not salary earned in China ?

happywanderer:

Nah, in theory you can claim back a percentage of the tax you've paid over the years for some things such as pension when you leave.  I won't be retiring here ;)

if you employer doesn't know what they're doing they might enroll you in the mandatory social insurance and housing fund for local hires, the later can be somewhat (not necessarily all) refunded when you quit your job.

Again, this doesn't apply to foreigners but I've seen foreigners get signed up for it by uneducated companies.

Actually, the general law has been issued by Ministry of Human Resources and Social Security in September 2011, and then left to the local governements to implement it. Some cities have it already in place for all the 5 insurances, some other only for some (for example pension and medical insurance only), some still didn't issue anything about it. The whole thing is full of contradictions. For more infos about it, have a look here: http://www.china-briefing.com/news/2013/11/12/foreigner-participation-in-chinas-social-insurance-system.html

Yeah I forget to mention it varies from province to province (or even city to city for that matter).

To circumvent this, I always negotiate a net salary when looking for work.  That way, the taxes are transparent to me and my salary will remain constant even if tax laws change.
