I found this little gem on a Aus web site but how many people in China heard about it?Reporting from China is difficult enough for foreign journalists but the job is even harder when you are kicked, punched and bundled into a van by security forces in the middle of a report.CNN reporter David McKenzie was in Beijing on Wednesday, covering the trial of Xu Zhiyong, an activist accused of "gathering a crowd to disturb public order" after he organised rallies to call attention to the alleged corruption of China's ruling elite. Xu is the leader of the New Citizens Movement, an anti-corruption group that calls for transparency in government and adherence to the rule of law. Reporters attacked live on air View Fullscreen The activist's trial is being closely guarded by Chinese authorities, intent on keeping the media away from proceedings in order to minimise public attention. As McKenzie and his crew try to reach the courthouse where the trial is taking place, a policewoman rushes out from the side of the road and tries to stop him in his tracks. The reporter manages to free himself for a moment, continuing to report the facts of the trial as more security agents in uniforms and plainclothes start to circle around him and his crew. McKenzie and his cameraman are then kicked and punched, have their phones and IDs confiscated and their camera broken. Despite the close police attention McKenzie manages to continue his report. "We are reporters. We are reporting in a public space," McKenzie pleads as police shove his head into the side of the van. The journalist said other foreign reporters were "roughed up" during the trial with one policeman admitting to him they were "only following orders". "This really shows how much China wants to manage the message," McKenzie said after he and his crew were taken several blocks away by the. "But in doing so," the reporter continued, "they betray some of the strong-arms tactics they use against journalists — including us — and obviously it's often far worse for Chinese nationals." The anti-corruption protester's trial comes amid the leak of records showing members of China's ruling elite possess massive offshore holding accounts, including at least 15 of the richest members of the National People's Congress.

I watch the news......
CCTV english news has more and more CNN broadcasts. Guangdong cantonese news programs are pretty anti gov alot of the time. The china daily english newspaper reported that above story if people wanna pull out censorship card. The south china morning post is a HK newspaper so perhaps it would be more trusted with the conspiracy crowd.
cooter:
The news article on CNN's website was directly censored as of yesterday. Could only read the headline embedded into the link. Can't find any mention of the story online behind the G.F. Thanks for posting it Phil!
There is a local tv station that has the news, there is an expat forum/news site for the city, there are local news papers. I think there is WeChat groups for it as well.
For general China news. NYTimes.com has a good section. I listen to The Sinica Podcast (a weekly discussion on current events in China) CNN, BBC news sites. And, my dad hasn't fully discovered how technology works, so he will sometimes scan newspaper articles for me and email them, despite all those articles being available online.
royceH:
That's great of your Dad to do that for you.
My Dad is even more of a Luddite (like father like son, in fact) and goes one step further for me....he mails me sections of serious newspapers. I receive them a few weeks later and then read interesting articles at my leisure until the next big, yellow envelope arrives the next month.
A few months ago he even shoved in dvd recordings of Jim Furyk's incredible round of 59 in a PGA tour event and a two part programme on Greg Norman. What an Old Man!
When I'm back home next July I'll shake his hand and we'll have some long conversatons. And I'll introduce him to my new wife.
Scandinavian:
:) It's pointless, but then again it isn't when it's done for the right reasons.
That CNN reporter was a fucking moron. He was going into a restricted area and wouldn't obey the police. If he tried that in America, the same thing would've happened. They kept apologizing to him, and CNN is tryin to make this something it's not.
It's simple. If you don't respect the laws of your host country, you will suffer for it. Don't come to China and try to make yourself into a martyr.
Scandinavian:
Yeah. An American copper would have put a round of lead in the dudes testicles for sure.
Hulk:
EXACTLY! A bullet to the head solves everything.
If I walk into a restricted area in the U.S., there are signs saying that I'll be shot if I continue. This guy just got kneed and camera-smashed. The cops are just doing their job.
If it's something that's not sensitive aka censored, then I can read about local news from a variety of sources....both domestic and foreign. I don't have a VPN, so the censored stuff I get from the repost websites (chinasmack, shanghaiist, beijingcream, etc) or from reposts on this website. Thanks Phil!
