Q: How important are hukous for Chinese getting married?

I was invited to the wedding where the bride and her family were from Beijing and the husband and his were from a place I hadn't heard of. During the actual wedding, a grandmother on the bride's side complained openly (again, during the wedding) about the husband was not from Beijing and why couldn't the bride choose a guy from Beijing. Obviously I didn't get everything, but the person who translated to me indicated it had to do with hukous.

Now, I understand why this might be advantageous for the husband, but why was the grandma complaining? She's already got the Beijing hukou, as does her whole family, so what's the big deal?

Beijing Hukous are a prized possession for folks near Beijing (Hebei, Shanxi etc). With a Beijing hukou you can buy a house quite easily, getting a car (BJ license plate), and probably some other stupid things. But the local government has refused to give out Beijing hukous for some time now.

Sorry to say this but ask a chinese friend how chinese from other provinces get treated in Beijing.

Let me explain if a chinese with an ID card that says he is not from beijing and he will stay in Beijing for sometime for working or studying or something like that then that person should go to the authorities and ask for a temporary  beijing residence card or ID according to the purpose of stay and the duration.if the police stops this person and he lives in Beijing and he didn't show that document this person will be questioned and might go to the police station.

Even chinese in their country have a strict policy against them here but am sure and positive that not many expats do know that fact in Beijing.

I'll go back to the point and tell you if you do have a Beijing hukou bin or household beijing paper then you are considered a permanent resident of Beijing which makes you feel a bit more better when it come to ID and documents and things like that.

If the woman marries this guy she might lose her right to that if she adopts the husbands household documents so i presume that is what that person in that wedding was complaining about and even if she wants to change back here hukou that will take decades to accomplish cause changing hukou to another province takes much more than we take to make a working or a visiting visa.

A: "... through ..."?  Only "through" comes to mind is "Shenzhen agent can connect you with an employer, who's authorized to hire waigouren ... and can sponsor Z visa." It's not like every 10th person you meet in Shenzhen's hood can sponsor work visa ...  The only way to change from student to labourer visa is just a regular way by: 1. Finding an employer, who'll apply for an Invitation letter; 2. Exit China and apply for Z visa in your home country's Chinese embassy; 3. Enter China in 30-days after Z visa was stamped into your travelling instrument ...As I am aware, you won't be able to switch to Working permit by remaining in China....,so make ready for a return to your home .... -- icnif77
