If you just buy one for city hanging out, you can get a new one for about 300-500 RMB.

it is depend on what kind of bicycle you want to buy, the cheap one from 200 to 300 rmb, the middle thing from 400-800 rmb and the expensive over 1000 rmb.

A good mountain bike like most young people (not serious cyclists) have back in the states will run you about 500rmb here.

499RMB plus pump plus lock and plus lights. All up 600 RMB. Perfect bike for Whatever you want to do outside of competitive cycling.

my friend bought a nice one for 450rmb in wall-mart. make sure u keep it locked up. almost all my foreign friendshave a story about how they lost their bicycle.

Where in the North are you?  Northeast (Dong Bei?)  Inner Mongolia? 

As the previous posters have said, a reasonably good bicycle will run you about RMB 300 - 600.  I am a cycling fan and a cyclist up north here, and if I can be of assistance, let me know.
