If I try it and it tastes dirty I won't eat anymore of it, if I think it's okay and eat more, they will eat that fish and probably get another one. Dirty tasting fish is a warning, sweet tasting fish is okay! As shuai said, you are in China
I try to stick to saltwater species. At least the toxins are a bit more diluted.
Have to give credit to a buddy of mine for this one:
He was eating dinner with a poorer local family. And the guy was so proud to be able to serve this river fish he caught. He told my buddy that they weren't allowed to fish area here this time of the year but he outsmarted them. He fished where they wouldn't look, right where to sewage is dumped into the river.
You can eat it, I just wouldn't eat a lot of it (like 3-4 times a week). I'm not sure WHY anyone would want to though. Freshwater fish here smells AWFUL and tastes like fish-textured dirt.
I haven't seen many clean waterways either. I've tried shrimp, different types of fish, and even eel but I couldn't tell you which was which by taste. Seriously, it tastes like dirt. I'm not making a euphemism, it really does have the same taste as a spoonful of mud.
I am used to eating freshwater fish (and salt water of course) as I fish back home, and not even catfish that live in mud taste like dirt.
Personally, if I want fish I try to stick to saltwater species or I go to Japanese sushi places that actually care about health standards and quality.
don't worry, if you anxious it very much, keep hold your cellphone when you eat fish. if you get posion, just call 120 (chinese ambulance telephone number)
Is it safe to really eat anything here? I find almost all fish I have eaten here tastes like shit (at least 50).
I miss fresh salmon.

Omg, salmon. I miss it too, and any other type of fish we eat back home, especially if you can get it without bones.
