Is there really a very finite shortage of jade in China or are the reserves tightly controlled to keep the prices up?
Just seems like there would be other countries with jade supplies as well. I don't understand why it's so damn expensive.
There is no shortage of common jade. However, like diamonds there are many different types & qualities. For top quality, you will pay more than you ever thought possible.
Part of the reason jade is so expensive is how it is commonly sold. When Jade rocks are found, it is impossible to tell what the quality is until those rocks are cut open. The rocks are sold either at auctions, or at wholesalers. The price of these rocks are normally set as if they were middle level quality jade inside them. But since most rocks have poor quality jade in them, the prices need to be set high so they can still make some sort of profit.
