Q: Jobs in Kunming?

Good morning! I am actively looking for opportunities in marketing and communications positions in Kunming. I hope to relocate to Kunming permanently. I understand larger cities in China have better opportunities but my first preference is Kunming. However, it seems almost impossible to get information about jobs other than English teachers. Can anyone please give me some advice on this. Any suggestion would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

About me - I have 6 years of extensive communications and marketing experience with diverse industries including Advertising, Market research, Aviation and international Wildlife conservation. Comprehensive exposure in governmental and non-governmental sectors at a global level.

The law in China is that a foreigner can not have a job which a Chinese person can do, hence the abundance of jobs here are for Native English speaking English teachers, and the need for a Foreign Expert Certificate. That's not to say it can not be done, but it will be quite difficult, I think. Beware of employers who offer you a Business (F) visa. While these allow you to do business in China, it does NOT permit you to actively work in China, i.e. a holder of an F visa for an English Training Center can not actively teach classes. I know of two instances in which such foreigners were arrested and deported after being found doing so. I know it is done by several foreigners in China, but be forewarned, you'll be taking your chances. Also, as many here will tell you, beware any businesses that tell you "oh, don't worry, we have guanxi with the local authorities, if there's a problem, we'll take care of it." Chances are, if you're busted, it'll be the typical "We will disavow any knowledge of your existence," Mission Impossible doube-speak.

Thats not true at all. While its true that they would frown upon a foreigner looking to work at Burger King. A chinese person can do any job. If that were the case you wouldnt have a job either.

Im not in sales whatsoever, but  it could fall under that category I guess. And on my visa I am listed as a sales manager, or just manager.  Which a chinese person could obviously do. Yet not as well.

There are lots of foreigners working for Chinese companies in Marketing and the like in China. I know some personally. So while your Visa points are all valid. Your being a bit negative  and acting like his job of choice is illegal, or a sham or just impossible. Which it 100% is not.

Easy to get?  Of course not, but if he has real world experience within that field, there will be jobs available.  I dont know any in Kunming though...

oh the bad idea is not about kunming...

Its just if he wants to work there illegally.. My first impression was that perhaps he is in another part of China and intends to do some trial work in kunming and if it is good then he will shift there...

Although he doesn't mention it but these days as I am doing it myself I think everyone is doing the same ...

I heard Kunming's a very good place

A: "... through ..."?  Only "through" comes to mind is "Shenzhen agent can connect you with an employer, who's authorized to hire waigouren ... and can sponsor Z visa." It's not like every 10th person you meet in Shenzhen's hood can sponsor work visa ...  The only way to change from student to labourer visa is just a regular way by: 1. Finding an employer, who'll apply for an Invitation letter; 2. Exit China and apply for Z visa in your home country's Chinese embassy; 3. Enter China in 30-days after Z visa was stamped into your travelling instrument ...As I am aware, you won't be able to switch to Working permit by remaining in China....,so make ready for a return to your home .... -- icnif77
