Q: Is Meten Bankrupt? My boss says so.
American expat teacher located in China, I have been doing online work for Meten for a few months. Yesterday I got a phone call from my boss telling me to stop working--the company was going bankrupt, and they wouldn't pay me for October.
Has this happened to anyone else? If you work for Meten or you know someone who does, please beware!
1 year 2 weeks ago in Business & Jobs - China
there are so few people on this site these days that it is to all intents and purpose in terminal decline.
you can see from the dates of when posts/comments have been made over the last week/month how inactive the site is.
The chances that another Meten employee comes to this site is probable close to zero.
thanks for sharing the information about Meten - i doubt the news will merit any interest outside of China.
China is not a welcoming place for foreign workers these days - the 'zero covid' policy is not one that would encourage anyone but the extremely desperate.
what has happened in Meten is very common, as is its' treatement of foreign employees.
you can be sure the top bosses have squirelled away the money somewhere by fleecing students and staff, and are cutting their losses to keep themselves safe from creditors.
No doubt they will emerge with another 'business' after a discrete interval only to 'rinse and repeat'.
As i said before, your best option is to leave as soon as you can, and find a job in a country that treats their foreign workers better than China does.

There was a news hint last week, China will soften zero-Cofid policy and slowly reopen.
Stock markets around the world all got wild, but up-tick was shortly lived, i.e. 'Sell-the-News' event and EX markets tanked shortly afterwards ...
Nothing on the web about Meten's bankruptcy ...
Meten Group isn't a minuscule company and real belly-up would be certainly announced over the web.
Sorry to say, but they most likely kept yer Oct.'s pay with the ordinary, convenient lie ...

METEN / Review on "Meten English", Shenzhen, Guangdong
... Manager: Good afternoon everyone, hope everyone is good. We will start this meeting by talking about the new scoring system for Foreigner teachers and Chinese SA's. All teachers MUST keep an average score of "4.8", if you fall below 4.8 2 months then your contract will be terminated and you'll be released from Meten English with your Resident permit canceled and with 14 days to exit China. Any questions? ( The students will score you after every class.)
A teacher: Ohh, guys did you hear that, we're working in a real life video game now where if the students give us low scores we are terminated after 2 months. How is that fair to any of us? Why would any teacher come all the way to China, spend a lot of money on a new apartment and Z visa just to play a company game that is designed to intimidate teachers to try harder, this won't make teachers try harder, you're making us laugh, and your new scoring system will encourage us to work less rather then harder. No foreign teacher will accept this long term.

chances are they want to get rid of you and don;t want to follow proper termination procedures.
And also sounds like they are trying to get out of paying you.
I suggest you get out of China as soon as you can and work in Korea, Japan or any other country that does not enjoy screwing foreingners over for sport.

... butT ... did you know, Japanese denim is the bestest in the world?
I just purchased Kojima Genes, 23.oz pair of jeans. Fabric is so sturdy, pants can stand by itself.
... can't wait when kids come for a visit. I'll send them to my room ... with jeans standing ... on its own.
No, I'm a good teacher and they weren't sacking me for cause. The story was finally picked up by Chinese media. Anyone else working for Meten, again, update your resumes:

English teaching ( ... and learning on the other side) is the easiest, when students like their teacher.
I realized that at working with 2-years old babies in China. One can have a several Uni's degrees, above native English speech and what not, but when your students dislike you, you'll experience an up-hill battle as a teacher.
I just read the first few paragraphs of your article, i.e. my Simplified Chinese is good-er ...
They still owe you monthly salary. That would be an issue for me, but what kind of troubles are facing isn't really my thing.
The other thingy is, at the latest Chinese Labour law modifications a year or so ago, all for profit Edu. companies in China must either become non-profit or they must cease to exist.
See this thread with explanation of all ...:

I will answer you question when, in redeeming my points I am garanteed a Ferrari instead of all the offer in store on echina.
I've heard that some branches of Meten have gone tits up ... but not the overall status of the company. It's all up in the air.
