I was clearing off my cafeteria lunch tray today (school-provided meal) and one of the workers stopped me from throwing away the one dumpling I didn't eat by saying "waste". I said "my bad" and was going to throw it away anyway until she grabbed it off the tray and put it on the table next to the garbage. Of course my used chopsticks had come into contact with that dumpling. I just pray that she plans to eat it herself rather than serve it as leftovers for the next meal.
I've also observed a hot pot restaurant where the waiter takes uneaten vegetables off people's plates after they leave and then sticks those vegetables on a new customer's plate.
So what kinds of unhygienic practices have you noticed regarding food preparation and serving?
Not washing hands, handling money and then handling the food, wiping the table that people have spit their food on with the same dirty rag, not changing the table cloth between groups of customers, the list goes on.
When a large table goes for dinner and one get inevitably gets too drunk and pukes on the floor and everyone just leaves it there and pretends there isnt a bio-hazard in the middle of the restaurant.
Pig carcass hanging outside a butchery, waiting to be cut up. The rats were helping themselves in the meantime. Really big ones. This was in Hong Kong, BTW.
change a baby's diaper on the table while everyone was eating was my best observation, but the buffet restaurants dont let leftover go in the trash, they are put out again for someone else.
hi2u:
The buffet is not unique to China. Chinese buffets in America are known to do that as well.
ambivalentmace:
yes chinese people running a buffet in america, not an american buffet like western sizzler, this would get your restaurant shutdown for a week on the first offense by the health inspectors, food inspections are done quarterly, not yearly.
Restaurant, squatting waitresses washing dishes piled up on the floor of the toilet, using just water and brush.

Oh, I saw that in Dali and Lijiang, where they wash the plates in the canal. Can you imagine what is in that water?
well, I used to darn near live off shao kao and lanzhou la mian in guangdong. it came to me pretty early on that intense inspection or whatever u call it might not be the best idea. I would sometimes think to myself about the guys making the noodles* about them using the WC and picking their nose and scratching their .....'s, but then I got to thinking that's not a good idea to think about that.
Meat's Meat; Man's gotta Eat
* for those of u not too familiar with this, let's just say that the 'chefs' get pretty darn intimate with the ingredients whilst scuttling u up some la mian....
