Ive asked a friend in the States to buy me an iphone and send it via mail to China. Is this a good idea? Ive heard of horror stories whereby parcels don't arrive or you get hit by a massive tax bill by customs.
Shouldn't be a problem. Just remember on the box when you send it don't make it obvious it's an iphone. You never know who gets to handle it. Other than keeping it low key and not too obvious the only thing is when it arrives make sure you keep it closeby and don't let your guard down when you are walking around the city. Some unsuspecting guy may try to grab it while you are phoning someone.
First if you do this, have them put a number lock in the phone so if it does disappear it isn't any good to anyone else.
Regular air mail should take 10 days, it does in any other country. I find to China takes 3 months. Other mail options like expresspost or courier are very expensive to China. I send a phone to my girl friend by the cheaper xpresspost, cost $75. Import tax was 250Y
I didn't think iPhone sold unlocked phones in the USA, you need an unlocked phone for China, I could be wrong on them not being unlocked,
If you plan on going to Hong Kong, visit an Apple store there, they have one of the cheapest prices on iPhones in the world. Just make sure you know what the price is before shopping around.
