Q: For those with ADD/ADHD in China

What medications do you use? Are there any medications for it available in China that are inexpensive? Help.

The following steps are ways to help prevent ADD and ADHD and to reverse the factors that cause them:

1) Change the child's diet to all natural whole foods. This means fruit, grains and vegetables full of natural vitamins, minerals and enzymes.

2) Eliminate dairy products and other animal products because these contain hormones, pesticides, antibiotics and the diseasesof the animal itself.

3) Eliminate caffeine, sugar and other sweets, processed food, MSG, aspartame (Nutrasweet) and other sugar substitutes and any foods that contain preservatives, food dyes or other chemicals.

4) Eliminate eating at fast food restaurants as most of these apparently use MSG and preservatives, plus the food in many restaurants often contains less nutrition, but many harmful chemicals.

5) Encourage the child to eat a lot of raw fruit and vegetables because they are full of health-producing enzymes, vitamins and minerals.

6. Drink water, and fresh home-made vegetable and home-made fruit juice. Eliminate soda pop, caffeinated beverages or milk from cows or any other animal. Rice Dream (rice milk) from your health food store is a reasonable substitute.

7. No white bread. Only whole grain bread, either home baked or from a health food store.

8. No white rice. Only whole grain brown rice and other whole grains.

9. No peanut butter: It contains aflatoxin, a fungus that causes cancer. Instead use Almond butter (It spreads like peanut butter and tastes just as good) from your health food store or other store. Also you can make home-made cashew nut butter.

10. Get proper rest. Children need a lot of rest and should go to bed early.

11. Get proper exercise daily, outdoors in the fresh air and sunshine.

12. Eliminate TV watching. It is reported that children watch an average of 43 hours of TV per week, that's longer than the average adult work week. While watching, they rapidly become almost hypnotized. It has been shown scientifically that within minutes of beginning to watch TV, the brain changes from the alert brain waves (beta waves) to the hypnotic waves (alpha waves) where the judgment center of the brain is bypassed. So the violence and decadence that the child sees, bypasses the judgment center in the brain and is implanted in the child's brain without any ability on the child's part to decide whether what they are seeing is right or wrong. The violence and decadence are accepted by the brain without any moral judgment being applied to it. It then becomes part of the child's permanent subconscious. What goes into a child's mind is just as important as what goes into his or her mouth!

I'm offended that you would trivialize this serious medical condition!

TedDBayer:

I post a serious reply once in awhile and you're offended,, SORRY..... I had ADHD, these make sense to me, things like cutting sugar, I never took meds. ,never realized I had a problem or what it was until long after I was an adult. I had the worst time in school, couldn't pay attention, but I'm smart and remember or figure out just about anything easily, so I got by. I have an artist/creative/mechanical aptitude. If I found a teacher entertaining I could pay more attention and get 90s, but I hardly studied, only remembered. The SAT tests, I'd get called into guidance and they would ask, why with these scores was I not doing better. I never knew how to tell anyone then. I was always spacing out and that really bothered me. And hyper, I always was on motor, I couldn't stay still until I was about 30,always the class clown or THE part animal, always unpredictable.. I was always doing something crazy. I could focus on things that interest me, mostly if they were creative to me and I'm faster others when I did things. When I was a teenager I bought my first motorcycle, took it apart, changed everything tank etc, bought an airbrush, painted it, water sanded and hand polished the paint, made a chopper. I just look at things and know how to do them. My bike was nicer than any of my friends bikes. I grew up with biker gangs around. To tell the truth I miss being that hyper, I had more energy and always felt sort of like I had elecriity running through me.Things I can focus on I can do at a higher level, creative things like building a house. I built a few, my last house 2400sq', I did in 8 months, mostly by myself, never worked in any building trades, in my spare time after working my regulare job. I can focus on details, so trim is perfect etc. I still find it hard to listen to a lecture. I have time, can't study Chinese because I can't concentrate on the books or tapes.

I am an adult with ADD.

My difficulties are mostly social.

I used medication for 1 year in 8th grade. It really did make me like a zombie. The drug was called Ritalin, generic was methylphenidate.

The thing I really needed in my childhood was alternative education that emphasized working on large projects. I taught myself computer programming and made my own Quake, Counterstrike, Starcraft and Warcraft III levels. I also got into Magic the Gathering, which is a very creative game that really builds up kids' brains. I've always been more artistic and creative than the average person, so I really just needed outlets for that.

I had a hard childhood, in the sense that I never had positive friends. I just fell in with drug addicts and petty criminals. Really, I think if I'd made the right friends, I would have done just fine. My parents, though, are not social people, so they didn't have many friends with kids. I think they didn't have any options for me.  I didn't really know what I was "supposed" to do, so I really just followed what friends said. If I had just had one friend who got good grades, maybe I would have mimicked him and also gotten good grades.

High school was a complete waste of time for me. I didn't pay attention in class and my friends were just drug users and delinquents. If they had reacted logically and withdrawn me from public high school, where I was not flourishing, and put me in either an alternative school or in Community College, I would have done much better.

I don't know if China will make ADD/ADHD diagnosis. As I understand, there is a stigma on mental illness here. It isn't viewed in the same way as the west (where there is also a stigma).

A: "... through ..."?  Only "through" comes to mind is "Shenzhen agent can connect you with an employer, who's authorized to hire waigouren ... and can sponsor Z visa." It's not like every 10th person you meet in Shenzhen's hood can sponsor work visa ...  The only way to change from student to labourer visa is just a regular way by: 1. Finding an employer, who'll apply for an Invitation letter; 2. Exit China and apply for Z visa in your home country's Chinese embassy; 3. Enter China in 30-days after Z visa was stamped into your travelling instrument ...As I am aware, you won't be able to switch to Working permit by remaining in China....,so make ready for a return to your home .... -- icnif77
