Wuhan has a US consultant but they do not register. How do I do that and why is it important?

Registration is not required with the US consulate. When you do, you simply are giving them your phone number, email address and place where you are staying.
In return, if there is any important news, such as "must get out of China now" announcements, you will be notified. In 6 years I have only heard from my consulate once and that was for a severe weather warning.
GuilinRaf:
I was warned twice this year in Beijing. One was when a US Embassy employee was beaten by the bouncers of a night club in Sanlitun and the other was advising me to carry my passport and all legal documents due to the "crackdown"
I did register, but I did it on line. China has one USA embassy in Beijing, and Consulates in three or 4 other cities. Guangzhou is one of them.
I have received a couple of warnings about weather, and one about traveling to Tibet. Oh, also one for registering to vote in election.
Look for the webpage of US Embassy in China, and see if you can register on line.
