Well I am sure we all missed family but how about what I didn't miss? That 'in your face' commercialism of Christmas that starts in shops back home around October was thankfully missing when doing normal shopping in Newmart and Walmart or the local QKL store. I admit it gets a bit much at times back home.
What did I miss apart from family? No snow!! Can you believe it? My first chance at a "White Christmas" and the weather gods opt for no snow even though the temperature is -27 at night!!! Go figure. Because of that, and no, it's not global warming, I missed the heat of an Australian Christmas at summer and lounging around the pool with a cold beer!!

To me, what I missed most were Xmas songs.  I was honestly surprised, but a Xmas Day without Jingle Bells or Silent Night by Perry Como or Andy Williams was not the same.  I finally managed to find on Internet a site with Xmas music from NYC, and had my belly full.

I missed the smell of a real pine tree in my living room.

I missed waking up to the smell of freshly baked pumpkin & banana bread.

I missed hearing holiday wishes from my friends & family.

I missed the holiday energy.

I missed going out and buying gifts.

I missed decorating a tree with decorations gathered over a lifetime.

I have been away so long that I actually found myself missing how much I missed it.

I miss China.  Being stuck back at home for 4 weeks with my disfunctional family, and being bombarded by the Christmas consumer madness, I find myself wishing I was back in China where I could just go on a pub crawl Christmas Eve and sleep all day Christmas.  China may suck sometimes, but it is nice to be 6,300 miles away from family at times too!

HugAPanda:

Yeah I get that 6300 miles away from family thing. I can't wait for the holidays next year, because I'll be far away :)

Considering that there were Christmas decorations and songs and whatnot, the only real thing I missed was the food. That is always the thing I miss most about home. Although I love my family, I don't miss them per se, since I do email them. But yeah, the food is almost a dealbreaker. I wish my mom could send me some in the mail.
