With in the 8 months I have lived here, I have already gone through 2 umbrellas.
Don't buy them on rainy days, you'll increase your chances.
For the rest, just check the goods before buying, there's no good or bad brand per se on these lands.
I find the non folding type from 7-11 shops pretty good. They have 7-11 branding on them.
With folding umbrellas I usually superglue the end of the spokes into the ferrules. They last a lot longer then, as they don't tangle when you open them.
Quality of any umbrella is not really good, but there are umbrella repairmen on every corner.
Just buy cheap, and expect soon you'll purchase new one. I got one for HK$ 100 at my last year's HK trip, but it was broken before spring this year.
Thanks for the answers. I am not that great a getting umbrellas because I am from Seattle, Washington, USA. There if you use a umbrella instead of a really nice rain jacket, we know you are not from Seattle.
ScotsAlan:
Same as where I come from. Too windy for umbrellas. The rain comes in from the side, not the top .

I'm from Newfoundland....I agree with you guys. I rarely saw people using umbrellas back home. From there I moved to Vancouver and the same is true. A good raincoat trumps any umbrella every time.
I just buy cheap ones. I loose them, or someone else will take mine and leave me theirs. Sometimes I give it to someone that visits. If I get caught out without one, I'll have to buy another one.
No one really 'owns' an umbrella. Sure, you may buy several each year but they are just temporary belongings. Those mysterious Umbrella Bandits will make off with your's with cunning and stealth, never to be seen again but no one ever seems to be responsible.
Either there is a Parallel Universe full of umbrellas right next the the one that is full of guitar picks, or lots of people have tons of stolen umbrellas stashed in their apartments.
This is one of the deep mysteries of the Universe.
In answer to your question, I saw an article on Digg recently: http://digg.com/2014/umbrellas-break-why-and-get-the-best-one
this article had a link to: http://thewirecutter.com/reviews/best-umbrella/
just make sure you never leave without your "rain coats"
