Q: What's with the mandatory millitary training for college freshman?

Any foreign professors out there that can shed light on why it's mandatory and just it's general purpose?

I think it's just a holdover from something somebody thought was a good idea back in the 1950s.

Nobody sane thinks that will make those kids into anything close to a worthwhile soldier.

It's just a chance for some indoctrination and maybe even a little bit of team building and forced socialization.

Dumb? yeah. Insidious? Probably not.

It exists so that tiny-dick Chinese "men" can inflict rigid discipline on groups of young people and imagine themselves as "leaders".

I have been wondering whether or not the passive aggressive behaviour typically displayed by men in China comes from deep rooted frustration related to the size of their manhood. It's roughly the same thing as how really attractive women don't become feminists. It's incredible to realize just how much a man's entire life is driven by the size of his thingy.

Perhaps they have some odd notion that it will mean all the citizens will have had military training making the country immune to attack. Of course most military training here involves training whilst NOT wearing full combat gear and shouting loudly. Those dirty foreigners will be in trouble when the PLA shouts communist slogans at them and they have nothing to defend themselves with but tanks and guns.

It's not really just a China thing though. I've met people from Korea, Turkey, and Azerbaijan that had to do mandatory military service for a couple of years. Compared to those countries (and many others) a couple weeks of memorizing rhetoric and marching in unison isn't so bad.

But as mentioned above, this isn't really military training, it's indoctrination.

War in Asia has always been about planes and ships, since the geographic distances are so huge...you cut off sea travel at choke points. Infantry isn't really going to help.

100% pure CCP.

Ostensibly, it's to ensure that all Chinese have the basics of military skills and physical conditioning, as well as instilling them with social cohesion and patriotism.

In reality, the mickey mouse training (walking around with umbrellas, or standing "at attention" with their cell phones) is so pathetically light that they'd be unprepared for an invasion by puppies armed with feathers. They also understand how bullshit it all is, and end up using it as another example of how ass backwards their leaders are, which is kinda counter to effective indoctrination.

It was likely dreamed up by some party leader, never got past the first draft of planning, and so poorly implemented that even if it was well-planned (which it was not), it would accomplish none of its goals.

Also... the camouflage uniforms are blue? Really? Who wants to take responsibility for that idea?

That would make more sense if the training was in winter.

the General Purpose of mandatory military training is to get the girls good at walking funny so they can pass their audition for The Monty Python Show!

Its to hammer home the point that they are property of the CCP and that they are powerless.

Its to do with something that never happened, that is never spoken about and therefore never happened.

Students who can get a little wild and unruly in open public spaces need to be taught to respect the glorious peoples liberation army and see them as fellow citizens of the harmonious society....no them & us mentality.
