I just paid 40 rmb for an iced latte. I feel a bit hard done by. It wasn't even good, just fancy and full of Ferrari driving fu'erdai. I think that's the most I've ever paid anywhere!
I paid 35rmb or so, for an instant coffee 3in1 of Nestle coffee at Hefei airport.
Others, maybe some 60 or like this, for some really nice Irish coffee in shenzhen
Paid 35rmb for an Espresso at an Illy coffee shop in Shanghai some time ago. Illy known for being one of the best coffee in Italy.
No problem with the price as long as the coffee was made right, as I was really craving for it, and it seldom happens.
Wanted to punch the bartender right in the middle of his face.
On the contrary, at "Jack and Magic Pea" coffee shops they usually make a very reasonable espresso for 15rmb. In real Italian restaurants too.
50-60 I think is the most, for what I recall as being pretty bad coffee. Actually I find that the cheaper places are often the better. At least here in town. Also, when paying 10 for a cup, it is easier to forgive (but never forget) that it sucks.
More than 50 in a Starbuck's in Shanghai. I've recently drunk a cappuccino in a Holiland Bakery and it was surprisingly good. For 15 yuan. And they know what you want when you say 'cappuccino', because they call it that in Chinese just the same.
I believe I've had 40 RMD for some American style coffee that had absolutely no taste to it except sewer water and they give you a cup the size of a chewing gum container. That's happened twice now to me, usually at the fancy looking western coffee restaurants like UBC. Those places love to give you tasteless coffee and charge a premium for it.
I've paid over 40 at a real western restaurant called 1920, but it was worth every kuai I handed over. I'll happily pay a lot if I know the coffee is well-made and enough to satisfy my thrist for coffee. Sometimes though, I am happy with some White Malaysian coffee for 12 rmb at Old Town. Good stuff!
The most was probably around 88 kuai....that hit my pocket books...j/k I was fine!
At the Landmark Canton Hotel in Guangzhou, Coffee House on Lobby of hotel. Walked in with a friend and had each one expresso. When asked for the bill, almost fell off the chair, 200 Rmb for 2 small expresso cups of so-so coffee. Needless to say have not returned there, or stayed at the hotel, since this "incident"
There is a tiny coffee shop in Changsha called 'White Knight'. The owner was drilled by an Australian colleague on how to make a good coffee. Costs only 10 RMB
Scandinavian:
whereabouts is that. when I am in Changsha I have so far only found drinkable coffee in the downtown area near the shopping street in the two StarBucks that are there.
sorrel:
Tongzipo Road, YueLu District. I am not back there now so I don't know if the place is still open :o(
i paid 35 RMB at the Hawiian hotel in Nanning.it was blue mountain from Jamaica and was the best cup of coffee I ever had.
I paid 70 rmb for a coffee at Shenzhen Airport. However, I charged it back to a client as "reasonable expenses".
The most I have paid is 22 rmb for a very small cup, which I considered a con. I really think anyone paying some of the prices quoted above are crazy, equating to between £4 and £10 ( $6-$15). I dont even buy coffee at the airports as they charge around 50rmb, just top up on the plane. I am not poor but just object to getting ripped off for anything. One of the best I have had only cost 10rmb.
40 for a vanilla latte in SH, it was poorly made coffee as well. The little bubble tea shop near my apartment charges 8 for a reasonably well made tall Americano, also had a nice Americano for 22 rmb at a little Chinese-style cafe. Avoid the name-brand places and stick with the locally run places, if they have a good coffee smell then they probably have good coffee.
I have never had a coffee in China. If they can't get beer or booze right, why let myself down? I even brought my own Tetly tea.
40-55 for a Venti at starbucks, a little more expensive than home but not much. plus great coffee
starbucks venti brew of the day is 23 rmb in jinan, more than 2.29 american i payed in hawaii last month.
Thank you for the answers everyone. I feel slightly comforted knowing that others have paid even more than me. I've since bought coffee beans and make it my own at home and have been saving quite a lot of money that way. I recommend it!
The only real place to get Blue Mountain is around 90RMB last I saw. In PuDong. The rest are fake.
