Q: where can I find lowai apartment in Guilin

is there an area with apartments suitable for foreigners? I'd like to be as close as possible to Zhongshan and Jiefang Roads. Places with real toilets and ovens, maybe no cockroaches.

Ted:

When you arrive in Guilin, go to a hotel for a fee days.  Use those days to seek for availble apartments in the area you wish to live.  What I did was to cruise around until I found an area that satisfied me, then went looking for an apartment  within the buildings of that area.  I visited a few buildings, went to their Admin Office and asked for apartments for rent.  They had a listing of available apartments, and from the list I selected a few meeting my needs for space, and they caqlled the owners and I was shown the apartment.

Most new apartments (or relatively new) will have western type toilets.  I have seen some with both types of toilets too.  Cockroaches will depend on the clening, and you can get fumigators for 100 Rmb per month to eliminate them, so that should not be a main concern.  But "ovens" will be, they are not common at all in China.  I have one, but I bought it after I moved in.

Be aware that here in China, most real estate agents will charge you a fee to show you an apartment.  In my city is 100 Rmb for two apartments shown.  They will also try to charge the owner if you do rent, and it is harder to negotiate discounts with real estate agents than directly with owner.

comment box not working?
thanks for the agent tip. no ovens thats barbaric. my gf thinks frigs are not good idea.

HappyExPat:

Ted, get used to the idea, ovens in China only used at some restaurants, bakeries and pizza joints.  At home it is an unknown fixture, like a dishwasher.  Also get used to the idea of a 11 or 13 cu ft fridge, since food is bought on a daily basis here, no need to have a larger one.

And be prepared, here microwaves are used mostly to heat up things, hardly no one uses them for cooking purposes.

I'm a good cook and I bake. Life without carrot cake? I love pie. My stuffed mushrooms are baked.,,,2 George Foreman grills mounted in the washing machine might work as oven.

A:No, it's not allowed to work under RP at 2nd job! I'd say, Z visa/RP sponsor can have an objections to your part-time job. I did the same at my English teaching in China and elsewhere, butT ... I casually mentioned at my prime job, some kindergarten or another school asked me to work with them part-time. Then, my Q: "Is that permitted?" ...  Answer from RP sponsor was always "Yes, but you can't be late or miss the classes at our school ..." with my reply: "No, our work schedule has a priority, and I'll arrange classes at kindergarten only in my free time." When I cleared that, I was undertaking any extra teaching hours at other schools and private students in my free time.Sometimes, teachers at my prime job asked me if I'm willing to have some extra classes elsewhere.I accepted after the talk with School's principal. I suggest, you test the felling at your Z/RP sponsor and once you see they don't object, you can work at 2nd job. Keeping your 2nd job as a secret from your employer won't work, 'cause you're laowai and Chinese know exactly what you do in your free time. However, despite your employer's agreement for extra work, you are still in violation of Chinese Labour law, and even if your sponsor agrees to your extra work, you can still get in trouble, because it's clearly written (somewhere ... ) that under Z/WP, one can work only at the Z-sponsor and nowhere else. Penalties ... I'd say, there won't be any warnings and you'll be required to exit China in short Exit time.It never happened to me, so I can't really advice how is when manure hits the fan ...  -- icnif77
