Q: why are there so many 'sock-puppets'?

what is the best way to boost a faltering website?

certainly not by allowing obviously fake posters or aliases.

i can count at least 5 aliases whose raison-d'etre seems to be to down-thumb posts and comments (they don't post anything themselves)

the result is that this site discourages real and interesting debate and/or questions, so people go else-where.

but then i suppose China doesn't want any debate or questions.

I see Phils Beiber question is still blocked despite Admin saying this is a 'technical fault'

Admin, if your technician can't fix this, get a new person who can

apart from those few who are clearly regular posters, the majority seem to be nothing more than wumaos

what would you do to improve this site?

I'd give extra points to those who contribute in a meaningful way to discussion (and not the self-absorbed 'me me me' posters)

sigh

I fear this form of social interaction is at an end. Society is too polarized now. It's a straight 50 50 split. People migrated to wechat where they can be part of a group with similar core values. Mixed debating forums are just no more.

Redditt covers anyone with questions. Indeed, the same questions have been asked and answered so many times now that people simply do not need to register to ask.

When I say migrated to wechat, I have a specific type of person in mind. Middle aged dude, against social media, no facebook... a classic forum poster. Gets a smartphone, protests, then gets wechat friends.

Also, stupid admin sockpuppets have not helped this site.

It is unfortunate that the 50 50 split is becoming a massive impassible rift. But human nature being what it is, we prefer to associate with our same type rather than deal with conflict and debate. Unless, conflict is your goal of course.

A few users try to keep this forum going, and I salute them. But it turns me off to see anti muslim this, anti migrant that, anti all opinions. Basically, right wing propaganda.

There are still some good solid posters here. Stiggs and NZteach for example. People who debate without resorting to calling people Burger boy.

It's a shame. It really is. I have met some great people on here. As in physically met them. Indeed, at this very moment I know of two ECC contributers who are getting pissed up in Thailand. Their first meet. Their introduction was via ECC. Their common interest is sport.

That to me is special. The friendships that ECC has given me.

The way forward?

How about a vacation meet up? Use our points to do a long weekend somewhere.

We are a diverse group. Easier to agree to disagree face to face, shake hands, and drink beer.

And we could all wear CFTU caps

I actually think all the regular posters should open five accounts and give them a dose of tit for tat.

Blondie_:

good idea.

i suppose living in China requires a schizophrenic personality, so why not embrace it ?

And i should be flattered that someone is bothered enough to stalk my posts and comments to down-thumb them so consistently.

anybody know know why "china got it right" and "reeses peanut butter cup questions" are not authorized for a week, just delete the damn things.

Stiggs:

Yeah of all the posts that could be banned, those two were about as harmless as it comes.

The sock puppet accounts don't even do it in a smart way.

They'll post a question saying please help with my visa problem or work contract or whatever so usually at least one regular will give them the benefit of the doubt and give advice and often the OP will never reply or post again.

That's a good way to encourage regulars to either ignore new posters or troll them assuming they're another puppet account.

hmmmm

now quite a few of the unanswered 'questions' are 'not authorised.

questions don't suddenly go from being accessible to not accessible, especially after being open for well over a year, especially from a 'technical glitch'

human intervention would be necessary to do this - so does ECC hire the incompetent because they are cheap?

ok Admin, what is happening?

the 'reese' question was a harmless one just asking about previously available products now not being stocked in shops.
