Obviously McDonald's (burgers and fries), KFC (chicken everything) and Pizza Hut (pizza) have done pretty well for themselves, but why aren't other western foods more popular here? In particular, I'm thinking of American barbeque like Buffalo Wild Wings (really just cheap meat and sauce) and Mexican food like Qdoba or Chipotle?
Is it because of poor marketing, the different spices added or is there some other reason?
Yeh, pizza and that is all well marketed. I reckon there's room for other foods here though. I'd like to see some decent Turkish kebab shops, just so I could stagger home with one in my hand at three in the morning sometimes and relive my youth. Ahhh, sweet memories.
good god, i miss Buffalo Wild Wings... jerk sauce, beers and all
There's no reason at all why Chipotle/Qdoba and Buffalo Wild Wings couldn't be popular here. Mexican food in particular is impossible to find, if a chain was able to produce the right ingredients and open up some shops here, it would be hugely successful. I think most of the big chains don't want to do business here, mostly due to all the negatives of opening a business in China. They don't see the chance to be profitable dealing with all the bureaucracy they will encounter. Finding a good supplier for ingredients is difficult, you never see the fresh ingredients Chiptole uses at any market, so they would have to spend millions of yuan on building an infrastructure to get quality ingredients, since you can't rely on the local farmers.
Also, look at Europe, fast food is hard to come by there as well. There are more options, obviously, but nothing like you see in America. We can't expect everyone to open up shop here, but I do find it crazy there aren't some Chinese owned chains of buffalo wing shops, and a huge lack of spicy Mexican food in the nicer parts of towns to appeal to expats and those who want some Western tastes besides KFC and pizza.
you do see the odd places around in the big city, but from what i can see a lot of chinese people seem to think back at home all we eat is burgers and pizza, and i live in guang zhou we have lots of western restaurants but im sure my chinese friends will never think of going in there unless i suggested the place, lots of markets to explore in china but the trouble is how to introduce it to people since they love chinese food so much
I don't use those chains even at home, I'd like to see real cream, cheese, sour cream, aged tender beef in China.
Chinese tastes, much like their thinking is very limited. Very few of my Chinese friends like western food. I cooked some chilli for my gf's English school opening. Many people tasted, but only I liked it (I thought it was delicious). Chilli dogs were excellent too. I took some friends to an Italian Restaurant owned by Italians. Again, excellent food, but they didn't enjoy it nearly as well. Other friends travel abroad but only eat Chinese food. This is a limitation of the mind. Of course, I have friends who love western food. In fact, I am helping two guys out now as they try to open an American restaurant. I am designing the place and helping with the menu and cooking. One of these guys went to Canada for school. These exceptions just prove, that it is possible for alternate ways of thinking to be stimulated. It will just take time for most Chinese people and this is why western food hasn't caught on yet.
GuilinRaf:
I too made "chili con carne" once. None of my chinese friend s liked it.
I usually bring chocolate back when i return to China. not only do they love the taste of it, it is also a good ice-breaker for a new semester. I am asked when i am going to return home to get more, or have some sent over. after about 3 month, I would KILL for that chocolate, but there i can't get anyone interested in importing it for one person
sorrel:
not the chocolate I wanted - and I lived in a postal black-hole (nothing arrived to me by post)
I have some of my friends who loves Indian food as well..There are so many Indian restaurants in Guangzhou and some in other parts of china.
