Q: Why is the Chinese lunar lander named after a rabbit?

As we all know, the Chinese myth of Chang'E better known as the ancient beauty who took a pill of immortality, floated away to the moon. There she met (or brought) a white rabbit, and that's why the moon is white.

But then why is the Chinese lunar lander named after it? That's like Westerners sending a moon-bound rocket called "Man on the Moon", or having the Mars Rover called "The God of War".

What if this Chinese lunar lander goes exploring and actually discovers that there is a real white rabbit as detailed in the myths of old! Now, that would be embarrassing.

Chang'e is the name of the lunar program, so all the vehicles are names accordingly. The lander/rover is named after a rabbit that according to myth (or fact if you're sufficiently Chinese) lives on the moon. The name was chosen after a rigged online vote.

Oh don't mind them, those are the little red echina fairies. The way I heard it the girl ate the pill of mortality to be with her true love forever. But then discovered her true love was a rabbit and they had to live on the moon. How much does that suck? They couldn't have bent her over further if they'd broken her back.

Huuuu, why not ? Russians used names like Sputnik (Satellite), Soyouz (Union), Mir (Peace). USA used names like Mercury, Gemini and Apollo, from Ancient Greek's pantheon. Naming stuffs after Chinese legendary beings does not exactly break the continuity ^^

A rabbit on the Moon, that would be quite some news. Maybe in underground caves made by the Lizard-Men of Lemuria.
