I've heard that some foreigners who've lived here for many years have renounced their original nationality to become Chinese. I don't quite understand why you would want to do this. Thoughts anyone?

If they were American, then it is probably taxes. Paying tax on the money you earn in two countries is not fun. And if you are American, depending on your State, you would need to pay that tax too.
nevermind:
yeah, but isn't it just the difference you pay? If there is one.
Xpat.John:
No. For Americans, if you make over 85k per year, you are taxed on your income minus the 85k (at the 85k+ tax bracket), in China there is no upper limit on paying taxes. Plus, if you are from states like California, you have to pay normal state taxes just as if you earned the money in that state. So, if you make above 85k, the tax rate (China & US & State combined) is about 80%.
I can do this..Where do I sign up, Gimme the resident card and let me bring my critters. I just wanna hug palm trees. There is ice in my yard today. Freaking cold weather is coming. I want refugee status with diplomatic immunity. I'll happily live in a hut and eat rice for the rest of my life. All I want is some women to keep me warm.
you dont techniquely have to really give up your citizenship to your home country. china does not allow for duel citizenship. so if you want more benefits in living here (if you plan to live here indefinitely) then you must "say" (sign forms) you give up your former country's citizenship. you essentially hide your passport from then on and only use your chinese documents while in china. if you want to travel to let's say the phils or japan then you whip out your american passport. china does not go to the united states and say "hey he is now ours"
so it means absolutely nothing except to people who are overly nationalist and like to judge others
