Q: Why is KFC so much more popular than McDonald's in China?

The food isn't that different, so why do they love it so much more?

First fast food to chain to enter China and generated a lead over competitors when they came. Plus the Chinafying of the menu has helped KFC immensely.

liuzhou:

Er. McDonald's opened in China in 1990 before KFC did in 1993. Both have "Chinafied" their menus. It's just that China prefers chicken over beef. McD's menu is now mostly chicken burgers here.

KFC have a stronger foothold in the Chinese market - i.e. number of outlets. KFC can be found in a number of small, provincial cities where no MacDonalds exist. KFC is synonymous with chicken but McD is synonymous with beef products (the least popular amongst the main meat types eaten in China). McD and BK have some ground to make up to emulate KFC sales.

I was just reading on Internet a survey of preferences for fast food chains back in USA a couple of days ago, and to my surprise KFC was on top of the list, and the least preferred was MacDonald.

I very seldom patronize fast food restaurants, here or back home.

It's not only China. KFC is more popular than McDonalds in a whole lot of different countries you might visit. Western countries too. In Scotland I rarely ate at KFC since the queues were about 5 times longer than the McDonalds across the street. (and one of their ancestors started McDonalds I would suppose!).

KFC is massive around the world. It does seem to be 2nd to McDonalds in North America though. At least a lot closer anyways.

I don't eat  KFC any where. At home it's too greasy, something the Chinees like. I always felt sick after KFC. I ate at McD here, wasn't the same, my Big Mac had an unknown meat, it was grey inside. What was that a 10 year old meat paddie??

Mr_spoon:

Dude I always get stomach aches after KFC, and then the lava schlitz.

KFC has a lot of "Chinese food" which is terrible . I only like their chickens.

I love McD, they deliver 24 hours. KFC don't deliver after 11pm, and they refused to deliver french fries!

Because McDonald's food is crap, it will eventually make you fat. I won't eat McDonald's anywhere, but I think the coffee is safe. I could be wrong about the coffee, though.

LAR:

Hi Bill,

The McDonald's coffee is fine. I was home back in the U.S.A. last winter. Around Christmas time, they had some special European-blend coffee beverages..quite cheap on sale. Just delish! :) Caf'e Mocha (my fave),etc.

Here in China, I went to a local McD's about two months ago with some of my students and had a banana flavored milkshake which was really good! I just go to McDonald's once in awhile.

Hey LAR, the milkshakes taste like oil slicks, but that's just my opinion! Thanks ...

I actually managed to find a book made especially to explain the success of KFC in China, I will try to find the name and author ASAP. It's quite interesting, and it will answer all your questions.

i prefer McDonald's cause i like to eat burgers and KFC is all about chicken which i do not prefer to eat.............Anyways it is a fact the KFC is more famous cause they blend in the Chinese food culture into the fast food industry in some way....TALKING ABOUT KFC CHINA........They serve different kind of rice and Chinese oriented KFC meals in their menu beside the chicken burhgers and french fries that we all know as FAST FOOD

I think it's the secret herbs and spices. If only vaccine makers used the same marketing tactic, we'd have 100% coverage by now.
