Below is the body of their reply to me this morning in regards to the fact the vpn doesn't work.

Avast confirms that access to its websites and products have been substantially blocked in China. This was a complete surprise as we had no forewarning from the Chinese Government about this action. As the Chinese Government has in the past months and years blocked other security companies -- both antivirus and VPN – it’s possible that we have been caught in a similar situation. Until we hear from the appropriate officials we do not know. We are attempting to determine who the appropriate authorities are and will keep our users informed as we learn more. Business-wise this has no impact on the company as our paid user base in China is very small.
The best option is to learn to use TOR but you need to install that from outside China.
If I remember well you currently live in Xinjiang, where Internet control is probably particularly stringent.
If your ISP works on a very narrow whitelist of authorized IPs, there is absolutely nothing even the best VPN company can do to give you access.
The mail they replied is just politeness. Of course the government will never keep anyone informed of the changes they make and certainly not a foreign VPN company.
