My advice is to take advantage of the international youth hostels (YHA) opening up all around the country. I stayed for a week in a four-bed dorm in one of these in Chengdu and met a bunch of kind, open-minded locals. Hell, a couple of them spoke near-perfectly my native language and managed to become like natural friends. Ones who didn't speak good "my language" even managed to understand my "putonghua", so I feel like I have some genuine friends in Ch. and who will stay in Ch. Even making plans to travel with some of them in the future.
So apart from hostels and your local Burger King, any advice about how to meet decent friendly locals?
With 1.3 billion people,,shouldn't be difficult,,,, just saying hello to pretty girls usually gets ignored,, best to meet people in everyday situations like shopping,,,, sit long enough in one spot and someone will come along, kind of like fishing.

I've met a few friends this way (probably would've met more if I were less shy and spoke the language[s] better) but just as in my own country don't find most day-to-day people to be like-minded. At home I find good places to make friends are: music shows and hobbies/sports clubs. Just curious if anyone has other suggestions, we don't have hostels back in Paradise (ie: home country LOL) but they have been a consistent source of decent Ch. friends here.
Ted is right. You can meet people anywhere. There is no need for a specific spot. If people chat you up you can continue the conversation or you can ignore them. It's up to you. With 1.3 billion, take your pick.
