Q: Anyone bought a China-brand laptop?

It's time for an upgrade, and JD.com has lots of laptops - with lots of numbers before the RMB... :(

Now, while I'd love to buy myself a new MSI or Alienware (even though it's vastly overpriced in comparison), I shouldn't really be spending that 18-25K on a laptop that is, primarily, going to be an upgrade just for gaming (ie, this current laptop does the job I need it to, without any great issues).

But, there are Chinese brands (Lenovo being the most famous) which can be somewhat cheaper.. even for a similarly specced system (not sure about MoBo though... they normally don't specify which one), and obviously, RAM is generic no-name).

So, have you, or someone you know, bought one of the Chinese brands, and being particularly happy with it?

yep, ASUS.

butttttt,,,,,,,,   is it really hardware you should be letting be your driving factor?  all kinds of firms are putting out decent hardware,,,,  the question is what OS,,,  what environment do you want to run on?  Are you already firmly entrenched in one? Sounds like you are. That goes a long way to narrowing your choice down for you.

IF you can wait till Chinese new year, come and pop into Hong Kong and buy a good Laptop there.

Yeah I back the others ASUS is cool and Lenovo is ok, just get a good one.

Shining_brow:

The idea of popping into HK sounds good - until you then factor in the costs of getting there - and possibly staying overnight(s).

Taiwan is not China! Haier is ok as far as Chinese brands go, but are you playing games that will tax the CPU? If so don't go with a Chinese brand, you'll need high quality paste on the CPU / GPU and I've had bad experiences with Haiers overheating.

Shining_brow:

Thanks for that. Just the sort of info I was looking for! (and the first bit :D)

MSI is also Taiwanese.. and like Asus, relatively trusted brands... so I'm not actually enquiring about them.

Mac !   Tongue

of course my tech-nerd brother disses me for biting the Apple.  He spends big bucks on AlienWare.

for a non-tech guy Apple has always served me well.

I bought a pretty good msi for 9000... I m not sure where to you get the figure off 18-25k, that definetly is alienware which is not very good anyways.

happy so far with my msi.

I have lenovo for work and it too slow, don't like it.

Shining_brow:

I would like MSI, but I consider it Taiwanese - not Chinese.

JD.com has Alienware (and MSI) over 20K for fairly high end systems - good i7 6th gen chips, 16-32G ram, 256/512G SSD HDD with 1TB 7200, etc etc...

Is your Lenovo slow because it's old or low specced? Or it's supposed to have good hardware, but is crap for some other reason?

Well I thought you wanted a china brand laptop because "cheap", that is why I mentioned MSI, because I bought one for 8000 RMB - 17" 970GTXM, I7 5600, 8 GB RAM etc.

Play everything on ultra. Alienware is overpriced shit.

My lenovo at work is worse than my MSI - i5, 8 GB RAM etc. But I dont play or do editing like CAD with it and I still feel its slow on windows, office software etc.

https://item.jd.com/2326025.html

just an example, no time to find the 17" one. I bought mine with discount but these are good ones below 10000 RMB. Lenovo with the same spec is not cheaper

My point is that I'm after reliable, and not overpriced!

MSI, Alienware and Asus seem to be double what I can buy in the US. BUT... if Lenovo is just as good - and significantly cheaper - then I'd go Lenovo or similar.

Another vote for Lenovo here... I have a Lenovo laptop and am happy enough with it.

Does the job, and it was decently priced.

Another vote for ASUS here - i got mine in Zhengzhou three years ago and it has been excellent. Only broke down once (which was my fault and they fixed very quickly for free). If you're into gaming you can get one with a 2GB graphics card for a much more reasonable price than in the West. And i can remember the days of my first computer which had a whopping 64KB of memory...

Shining_brow:

I want to play Witcher 3 - and I'm looking at an upper-end spec... I've found an MSI or Asus on NewEgg for about $1400 which seems to suit my needs... and that price is vastly different to the exchange rate for something similar.

You're full of it. Everyone knows China marks them up ridiculously. And the West is not a country bub! America sell cheaper than the UK (well at least before the pound fell) And they are still cheaper than what they sell in China

I bought ASUS as well. It does the job.

Problem with buying in China is getting a legit windows.

I bought my laptop in China, but I asked a friend to send me a genuine windows package from the UK. It cost me $120, but after a clean install I don't have the bloatware that Chinese copy windows comes with.

I reckon the hardware is all pretty much the same, but the point a poster made above above about the quality of heat sink compound is very valid. That comes down to build quality.

Software is the key. Do a clean install.

dom87:

msi comes without any installation... best thing ever. Just dont buy preinstalled chinese crap
