Q: Appropriate present to give Chinese friend having a baby?

My tutor/friend is expecting a baby in february. Is it appropriate for me to give her a small present?

What kinds of presents are commonly given (other than money)?

A hongbao with cash in it. If you just spend want to 20 kuai on some cheap teddy bear it's probably best to not give her anything.

Hongbao. How good a friend is he or she? Remember the size of the hongbao is proportionate to the friendship . So a good friend your looking at about 500 kuai. If you give to little you both lose face

Dont give anything until she has delivered and baby is celebrating the full month from birth date. Buy a small gold pendant or bracelet for her baby. If she is your good friend of course.

Actually, no hongbao is really requested at the present time.
Usually, after the delivery, your tutor/friend would invite you and other people to eat out to celebrate the child's 3 months anniversary (if I am correct). At that occasion, you can either offer a hongbao, a toy or some very nice clothes.
Some may offer a small golden bracelet for the baby, as part of the Chinese tradition to protect the child from ghosts, for the child to wear it.

buy some cute cloth for the baby is Ok. Do not need things too expensive. Things like gold bracelet might be some kind of burden to your freind.

Gold presents is usually  presents from grandparents. Hongbao will from other relatives and close friends of the new parents. And you should think about Hongbao or gold gifts on some special occations like one month, 100 days, birthdays, Chinese new year.  Cloth and toy will be Ok at any time.
