Q: Are there any decent gyms in central Shanghai that I can pay as I go or on a monthly basis?

I have just arrived in Shanghai and will be staying in the city centre for the next month or two. I am looking for a gym near the city centre, that I can pay a monthly fee to use or else for each visit. I'm not looking for anything particularly fancy, just a decent sized one with some free weights and benches. Any suggestions and details of the typical price per month would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

If you have a smart phone, use the app "大众点评“ (Da Zhong Dian Ping) and look for gyms nearby.  Just use a general search term like 健身房  and that aught to do the trick.  You can even use the software to sort the gyms by proximity to your location if you want, in order to filter out the ones too far away. On each gym's page that comes up they will probalby have membership prices listed....  Many gyms offer year memberships (年卡) half year memberships (半年卡), "seasonal cards" (季卡), and even month cards (月卡).  If you're here for more than a month you'll probably be more interested in a seasonal card, which ends up being around 2-3 months. Otherwise you'd have to stack up with month cards which I'm sure would not be cost effective.

Make sure to pay attention to if any of those cards are on discount!

A:Chinese are generally pretty tolerant friendly and accepting whatever foreigners do.  I spent 15 years in China but I wouldn't say there are that many don'ts....Don't assume that many people speak English though and learn some Chinese. Don't speak much about politics unless you want to praise Chinese system.  -- Natalie363
