Moving there soon, any tips would be appreciated!
Bearing in mind no one answered your original question 6 days before I'd hazard a guess that on this website the answer is no.
Have you tried searching t'interweb? You might get some pointers there.
I have only been there on 3 occasion, each time for a term of 4-7 days. Depends on the district you are going to reside. Taiyuan is old as is most places, and it can b quite dirty, like most aces, however it can also be fun. Just depends on what on what are expecting. But one things for sure, it get's' COLD' and mean 'COLD It can in winter -20+ easy. I as out walking beside the river carrying a bottle of Fanta, and after 20 minutes froze solid. Just enjoy it and good luck.

Thanks for the note, In Jining at the moment so I think Taiyuan will be more lively than here! Will remember to wrap up warm
I was there for two years from 2011 and although not as polluted as it used to be, it can still be a concern if you are elderly or a susceptible to chest infections. The main industry is coal mining and they burn a lot of it, especially during the winter. It has an ancient history but the city is modern with lots of new constructions. There is an airport and its on the fast main rail line to Beijing, a direct line to Xian has just opened. There are supermarkets where you can buy imported food, such as Wal-Mart and Carrefour and there are many bars and restaurants. The ex-pat community although not as large as the coastal cities is growing.
