I've noticed that Metro has been selling imported frozen meat from Australia since a few months and I've been tempted to buy it. However, I vaguely remember reading an article saying that the meat that is sent to China is actually of the lowest quality and that Australians themselves wouldn't dare to eat it, so that's why they send it to China because they think anything imported = better quality. I've noticed that some of the imported Australian meat meat is actually cheaper than the one that is locally produced, so I am having doubt about whether it would be safe to buy it.
Any thoughts?
What I do is the following:
- I do not buy "imported meat from just about everyone, only reputable vendors, Chinese are prone to sell you "local" meat labeled as "imported".
- I have tried so called "imported meat" sold at Walmart. Sometimes juicy and tender, just delicious, and sometimes tough and just no darn good.
- I do patronize a couple of local restaurants who list "imported beef" on their menu. Expensive, but the results have made the effort worth. After being a customer for some years now, I do know the owners personally, one a fellow from Taiwan, the other a fellow from USA. They are both kind enough to order an extra box of steaks for me to take home, as long as I continue to visit their respective restaurants. That has worked very nicely for me.

I've bought the imported steaks from my local Ole place, and they're fine. Not the best steaks I've ever had, but certainly not the worst. Thus, I keep buying them.
I hope that helps...
Australian beef is grain fed, the best is grass fed. Still I would imagine the worst Australia has to offer would kick the crap out of the best china can do, simply down to the levels of pollution in everything here.
philbravery:
Not all export beef is Gain feed
i have worked on cattle stations in NTH Queensland and the NT
and I can say without a doubt that those cattle we put on a boat in Kurumba for Indonesia where straight from the paddock and not grain fed
I do conseed that there is a large grain fed export trade also

Honestly wasnt aware that australia had grass. I've only ever seen grain fed in the stores here. I bow to your expertise!
I'm still saving up to finish my goal of eventually trying everything on the menu (Hong Kong, not BJ) including the Aged Australian Beef selection - Porterhouse Steak 24oz. 748hkd
Scandinavian:
haven't tried the specific menu item but Morton's in HK generally serve good food....
The Indonesians just canceled a order 80 thousand head of cattle so if China needs more
we can supply it

That would feed a lot of people, especially with the amount of beef they dont use in their dishes here.
I bought one slice last time and it was awful after cooking , never gain
Has anyone cooked sous vide? had a gander at a guy cooking a steak with a slab of butter and erbs in an airtight bag, stuff looks amazing! I really want to try it!
