Q: Black teachers, how is your experience

I would like to know what other teachers of color experience was like. Are you treated the same as your other colleagues, some of my students scream when they see me. They told the white teacher they think I am a terrorist just not the welcome I was expecting.

You say "of color", and you expect an answer?

You need to upgrade to the 21st century dude.

icnif77:

What's wrong with 'black' or 'colored'? I'm Non-native English, so I really see some 'new ' words describing Black people. I know African American, but that's it.

Who cares! Just keep sending your CV and docs! Never stop, and send it everywhere. I consider 'looking for job' as my part-time job. 2H per day behind puter, every day! I don't wait or expect too many replies, either. In the end, you just need one or two right replies! Good luck!

ScotsAlan:

I agree IC. My worry was that the term "colored", is very old school. And of course, it's American spelling.

I doubt very much that the op has kids running away from him shouting "terrorist"...

'It might happened the terrorist yelling, butT...first you must teach them: 'ter - ro - rist' and 'ba -na- na'. I do that all the time.

I had new word 'PE' this week in Grade 4. We did it well, however kids knew 'exercise' already. I didn't try with 'education' yet!.

I think you are confusing "of color" (which means non-white) with "colored" which is the old term for blacks.

@engl: I wasn't really sure! I wouldn't say 'colored'. I'd say 'black' or 'AfricanAmerican'. Is 'Black' derogatory, and 'colored' is more suitable?

Robk:

LoL...

I always thought people were way too sensitive about what words to use.

Colored is just a dumb one... of color is stupid too... we all have a color... and actually white and black is technically NOT considered colors. White (the color) is the reflection of combination of multiple colors and black is the total absence of color... which is funny to called them colored.

We are in the 21st century... time to stop tip-toeing and just call black people black, white people white, brown people brown... and stop feeling all wussy and hurt about it.

Anyway, I used to see black people get more racial remarks and weird comments. It is getting better but Chinese have this thing against dark skin (in their culture) that makes them look down on people with darker skin. I could explain it... has to do with social classes, farmers being at the lowest... but meh.

China teaches it's citizens to be racist and hateful (look at how teachers treat Japanese students). They are taught  to think the worst of dark skinned people. But there is a sliver lining, many reject the teachings of their elders and teachers.

Depending on where you are, Chinese would not be outwardly expressive of their rude thoughts. They will treat you differently based on whether you are American or from an African country (sadly many Africans come here with the purpose of breaking the law)

I do find the whole terrorist comment odd, maybe your complexion is light enough to be confused for Arab.

But a lot of what you will experience comes out of ignorance. I always say, if you can't for whatever reason tolerate ignorance, do not come to China.

I don't think "of color" is unusual to say. Black is a specific race, Latino can be a race, Middle Eastern etc. "of color" to me just means not white. He/She is asking what the experience of nonwhite teachers is without limiting responses to black teachers strictly.

Sorry I can't be of more help, Star. I think it depends on where you are. In the major cities people will tend to be a little more educated and progressive. Where are you living?

Now terrorist is stupid; that's not even the stereotype. Ironically it would have been more progressive of them to ask you to start break dancing or do a windmill dunk!

i don't agree with the answers above, saying that "China teaches it's citizens to be racist and hateful (look at how teachers treat Japanese students). They are taught  to think the worst of dark skinned people. But there is a sliver lining, many reject the teachings of their elders and teachers."

I am a Chinese, and none of my teacher had taught us like this ever before. They told us that we are one world, and we, especially with the Asian and African people, are friends.

Sophia: Did they teach about all the bad things Japan did to China?

Did they teach you about all the bad things foreign countries did to China?

Did they teach about the good things Japan did for China?

Did they teach you about the good things Foreign countries did for China?

I know the answers, this is how you teach hate. You do not say "hate these countries" but you say "this is what these countries did to us"
