I've read on a few forums from the Marianas, Marshals that it's not permitted to bring fresh berries to the mainland. But what about those vacuum sealed packages they sell in China? Will I get arrested for trying to smuggle in narcotics (they really aren't), or will customs just confiscate them? Or is it ok? I'd really feel stupid if I end up in jail for trying to show my friends an exotic fruit.

Fruit can hide insects that do not have visas. These insects may be in a new environment and have no enemies and then take over and take jobs from native insects.
You won't be allowed to bring over fruits from China. I saw a lady at the airport once. I believe it was in Chicago and they pretty much told her to open her bag and they took all the foods/fruits and whatever she had planned on bringing. She said it was for her family, but they didn't care they took it from her anyways!
If they are sealed and vacuum packed no problem, same as tea and so on, the last time I visited, I took the dried grapes that you can use as a blood pressure reliever, no problem. Well, kind of a problem, I went through customs, they asked if I any fruit and things that could bring in insects, I said no, but I had grapes from China. What happened was even funnier, there was silence, then a hugh lecture, before I broke in and said the were freeze dried and vacuum packed; she called me an a**hole, I told her; tell me something I don't know.
