Q: Can I take excess luggage on the high speed rail?

I will be coming to China with the maximum luggage allowed on international flights- two large 50 pound suitcases.  I want to take the high speed rail to my next destination but I'm not sure if it will be a problem?  I'm also wondering about excess baggage on domestic flights.

OK, one at a time.
On domestic flights in China, you are limited to one suitcase that will weight no more than 20 kilos (about 43 lbs) and one carry on.  No lighters or matches anywhere, no batteries on any electrical device on it (must remove them).  Yet, I do see Chinese checking in one suitcase, and boarding the plane with lots of carry-ons.  Excess luggage charges are very steep.

On trains (high speed or not), you are limited also to whatever you can store in your compartment or over your seat, not to weight over 20 kilos too.  Yet, I do see many carrying way over that limit, and no one says anything.  One warning, from waiting room to boarding train, depending on track and station, could be a 2 to 3 bloskd of walk at a very fast pace, and may go up and down stairways too.  Carrying two suitcases at 50 kilos each could be a problem.  But there are fellows thyat will offer to carry both for you to your train and compartment, do not pay over 100 Rmb for that "service".

Well said. Some charge 20 RMB per bag. I've met an old guy who charged 15 for all.

I frequently travel with excess bags, and I'm doing that now. Nobody bats an eye while I'm dragging four suitcases by myself. I don't know anything about limitations, but nobody has ever bothered me about it. Same on slow trains.

Getting back on the train tomorrow with excess bags (big ones) which don't even fit in the overhead compartment. In fact, the train folks often help me with my bags.

I had a workstation computer shipped to Hong Kong from America and I went to get it.  The package was HUGE and heavy and I was also carrying my normal suitcase and bag.  Everywhere I went, train attendants helped accommodate my excess luggage.   The only problem was my physical limitations and I often had to make two trips up and down stairs because of the excess.  This was a transit by train.

Yeah, I had that issue when carrying a lot of bags. Most of my bags are like 30kg each, so I can usually lift them up and walk up the stairs... but when I was also traveling with my wife and moving (7-9 bags... argh), I had to make two trips... exhausting, but a good workout.

sth i find very weird. when i first arrived to china with my 2 full over weight suitcases. i went to the counter to book my flight to my final destination the checked both heavy suticases without any problem . i wonder if you are connecting from an international flight they over look the heavy/ extra luggage? but my advice to you is to look into staying the night or 2 in the big city. and ship one of your suitcases to the school. (sort them out so that you will ship the least important stuff. because taking the train with 2 suitaes and carry-ons will kill you.

A:Good question!  I'd say, if you study at Uni in China beside working full-time as an E.T. with Residence permit, you don't interfere with your full-time employment. It's your free time and you can do anything you want, with respect to the Chinese laws and customs. Have a look at terms of Z visa/Residence permit and ... ".. you cannot work (and earn monies!) with another employer ..."That's all it is! Your RP sponsor title is written on the RP stamp in your passport, I think. It's in Mandarin, so I've heard about that from someone ...At I.D.-ing by cops, they know where you work and than more details about you are just a phone call away ... and it happened in person ... LOL ... during the day-time stroll through Wulumuqi, Xinjiang, 2012/13 semester. Now under RP, you're free to surf Internet, jog, ... and study, too. I suggest, you look and ask at the Uni, you plan to study in the future. Have a detailed look at requirements for studying and attending chosen Uni.Good luck! -- icnif77
