So I'm going to start teaching in Shenzhen fairly soon, and the organization I'm coming with has suggested we buy a few gifts from our home country to offer to the principal, or to our head teacher or whatever.
I thought about buying a dream catcher, maybe some maple syrup, but I'm not sure they'd know how to eat it, or have anything to eat it with. Anyone ever tried offering maple syrup to people here? Success?
Any other recommendations of stuff to buy from Canada (or North America in general) that people over there would like would be very helpful!
Pins, pins, pins, pins, pins.......go to the dollar store and stock up..They love anything with the flag on it. Maple syrup will be lost on them. Keep it for yourself. Smuggle a few cans of Canadian too. Don't hand 'em out too quickly either. Save those for the right time. Take a few newspapers for your own use.
If you bring maple syrup you will waste time and suitcase space. Locally, they will have no idea what to use it for, and besides, many will say "it is too sweet !". Pancakes hardly exist here, and if one does eat them, will be without syrup. Mostly used for French toast do.
Maybe you will be better of with some replicas (or pins as suggested) of a maple leaf, the Canadian flag, and if found, maybe some Indian relics would be appreciated. But be aware, here is not the gift value what's important, but that you brought a gift (whatever). If the school director or head teacher is a man, maybe a bottle of spirits or a cartoon of cigarretes would be appreciated too.
derek:
Right Happy, how could I forget, cigarettes are much appreciated here!
I have tried everything with my factory, but the best so far have been t-shirts (Chinese t-shirts suck compared to back home) and Canadian Whiskey....I find Crown Royal is liked very much.
Smoked salmon and maple syrup will bomb...trust me.
Canadian cigarettes are good too, but they seem to prefer their own, so don't waste your money.
GuilinRaf:
Salmon bombed? Wow, I would have bet my mother that they would like the smoked salmon. good to know!
thedude:
Actually most people here in fact do like salmon, but as a gift, for me, I have not gotten a great response....maybe other people have had different results.
GuilinRaf:
Nononono Ted, you dont smoke the salmon! When one talks about smoked salmon. that is when you force a salmon to smoke until he croaks. And let me tel you, it is NOT an easy feat to light a cigarette under water!!! That is why it is so expensive.
Never mind the principal... if you can manage to get some proper cheese into the country your fellow foreign teachers will love you forever!
I brought Lindorf chocolates as the chocolate here sucks and perfume. Altho the excepted perfume in China is Dior and Channel (because of supply and advertizing). I think Channel is an old lady perfume for keeping men away. I had to convince GF that my perfume was good and I picked scents that I liked except for the Katie Perry which I liked but the cat bottle was just too cute..
A Bottle or two or Newfie Screech, I'm all out and St. Patricks day is coming

the gift that keeps on giving, shaking down alberta for money for the rest of the country and calling them villain because oil will destroy the environment and they take the money from the oil, hypocrisy would be a good gift.
If I would venture to Vancouver again, I'd bring some Maple Syrup for me morning's hair-do ...

I figured when Burger King joined the party in Canada and they are already in CHina, that Tim Horton's would come to the party also. It would be nice to get some decent doughnuts in CHina.
Well I just watched a rebel media video on you tube that showed a liter of fuel in Vancouver was 1.7 per liter and 50 to 70 percent higher than driving down to Washington state to fill up.
I wonder who is responsible for all that traffic and pollution forcing people to cross the border to afford driving cars. Let's raise the price, force people to walk or go green and make everything brown and covered in smog, what could possibly go wrong? INDEED?
there is no better gift than a geniune Maple Sirup made in Canada from a Canadian maple tree!
