I am in Thailand right now, and I went to the embassy to get either a tourist or family visa (wife is Chinese) to China, but they told me, for the next month or so they will only offer a visa to me if I were to go back to the states...Any info about this? Any loopholes? Thanks

They are right man, there has been a M, S, L or Q visa system where they don't issue any visa's to anyone going to China especially those with old M or Q visa's in their passport and its because of the National Holiday, it's "control the flow time".
There is NOTHING you can do man, you must go back to America or mail your passport back to the U.S for a Q visa or Business visa.
I have proof that I am telling you the true 100% a British guy I know went to 3 countries and wasted time and money trying to do what you are doing and he ended up going home to England (I can give you his wechat ID to help protect you from yourself.), the same will happen to you, so find travel agents online in LA or fly home.
This has been around for 3 years now. It sucks and its unfair but no choice. I'm not saying this will work but you have a very slight chance to get a Q2 visa in Hong Kong, but its very slim, make sure your wife made the invite letter already.

Go to Hong Kong, upon arrival they will give you a slip of paper that is a temp residence permit for Hon Kong, keep the paper and take it to the Commissioner's Office of China's Foreign Ministry in the Hong Kong S.A.R (website)
I got a Q1 visa there two months ago
Problem this month is that it’s the big National Congress meeting in Beijing. So they clamp down temporarily on all sort of shit.
