Q: Changing non-teaching jobs: do you still need a "release letter"?
This may happen for me in the future and I want to know what I'm in for.

Your work and residence permits, and your FEC, are all tied to your current employer. If you do leave his employment, you will need new ones now tied to your next employer. A release letter is required from your old employer in all cases.
