Q: Chinese evaluations of Western fashion

The previous iteration of this question was apparently deleted for not being explicit enough in its Chinese subject-matter. Here is my second attempt: how often do you find that what is considered unfashionable in our own respective countries is considered fashionable here in China, either with regard to clothing, lifestyle, or attitude?

All the time:

 - many young people wear heavy black glasses frames without needing to wear glasses. WHY????

 - women of a certain age wearing 'Hello Kitty'

 - the 'Beijing bikini'

 - over-use of sequins in day-time clothes

ilcornalito:

If I meet somebody wearing black frames without glasses I immediately assume they are  a new type of stupid, I feel upset anytime I meet one. I don't know why, can't avoid it, makes me terribly angry. I have an employee that wears them and takes a hard time from me almost daily, I cannot avoid to dislike her and not agree with anything she has to say no matter how correct her argument is.

Maybe I had some childhood issues with somebody wearing black-frames-no-glasses.

They think large frames are nerdy, same back home among some urban youngsters, obviously none of them knows what nerdy means.

Can't agree more! The big framed glasses are so ugly. Most of the younger generation Chinese people don't know anything about fashion, they wear cheap and so called " popular " clothes on Taobao.

Chinese have absolutely zero fashion taste, they might blindly follow what is trendy at the moment but won't dare creating/finding their own style.

Also what's up with the golden color on everything? Just because it is coloured in gold doesn't mean it's gold, it doesn't make you look rich, you only look like a cheap person who wants to be what he/she can't be.

I come from a country where modesty has been in fashion for a while.

MaryCeleste:

Modesty is always more fashionable than anything else in my book, but it's rare and unfortunately most people can't appreciate it.

I think that empty glasses frames, hello kitty etc,and a lot of the clothes that young guys wear are ridiculous. That being said, I'm old and belligerent and not exactly up with the latest cool kid fashions. I remind myself of my parents and grandparents smirking at the stupid fashions I used to follow at that age. Nobody should take anything I say on the matter seriously.

I come from a country where stupid people from a certain state with a shore dress like idiots. They were bedazzled dragons and tigers on shirts and trucker hats. I think they look stupid too. The glasses with out lens, is because they think it makes them look young. I used to tease coworkers about it, by telling them I was going to poke the lens to check if they are real, like they used to do about my arm hair(I am of Italian ancestry, so I have naturally hairy-ish arms and legs). The thing here that I have explained I don't like is either the women that over dress big time and makes them look like high end prostitutes(sorry but it's true), or the ones who wear so little in the summer it leaves nothing to the imagination.

Are you asking about your love of cross-dressing? Don't worry, that's big every where.

A:Good question!  I'd say, if you study at Uni in China beside working full-time as an E.T. with Residence permit, you don't interfere with your full-time employment. It's your free time and you can do anything you want, with respect to the Chinese laws and customs. Have a look at terms of Z visa/Residence permit and ... ".. you cannot work (and earn monies!) with another employer ..."That's all it is! Your RP sponsor title is written on the RP stamp in your passport, I think. It's in Mandarin, so I've heard about that from someone ...At I.D.-ing by cops, they know where you work and than more details about you are just a phone call away ... and it happened in person ... LOL ... during the day-time stroll through Wulumuqi, Xinjiang, 2012/13 semester. Now under RP, you're free to surf Internet, jog, ... and study, too. I suggest, you look and ask at the Uni, you plan to study in the future. Have a detailed look at requirements for studying and attending chosen Uni.Good luck! -- icnif77
