I have been watching some show recently and discovered that many chinese girls will act exactly like an american singer when singing. It makes me disgusted to be honest. Its great to hear western girls sing it but come on man. Especially trying to copy Adele or Mariah Carey. They really dont have a sense of creativity. Not saying its bad but hey, we are who we are.
Nothing wrong with that, It's their choice, man ,just take it easy.
I enjoy lt when westerners sing Chinese songs or Chinese people sing western songs, nothing to compare with the original ones tho,it's anther view to watch.
Let's just Embrace it.
Mariah Carey is too porky for me and seems to be an air head. A Chinese woman would look better.
xinyuren:
Too porky? Give me some pork on the side any day! And I respect artists who write their own material. The girl is not an airhead. Add to that a voice like an angel and you have an almost perfect entertainer. I remember her from her beginning when she was an atrocious dancer. She has gotten much better since those days and I pity any girl (Chinese or others) who try to copy her. They just sound ridiculously inferior in comparison.
TedDBayer:
Yes maggie, I have yellow fever bad, and Mariah is an airhead, google it.
When I listen to the copycats, my ears automatically compare them to the original singers and they usually bleed from the pain. Especially if we're talking about Mariah or Adele. I love music too much to listen to poor substitutes.
That really bothers you? How ironic. I tell my students, if they ask for other ways to improve their English, to copy a singer or actor, to try to copy that person exactly.
Maybe you don't like that style of music? I don't know, you are confusing me, you make no sense.
xinyuren:
copying music styles to learn english is one thing. Copying a singer's style for entertainment value is quite another. I much prefer a singer who covers someone else's song use their own style and make it unique. When they copy the original singer's style, they are just begging for comparison and usually they fall horribly short.

Good point. I think singing is effective when learning a language. It's true, to perform a great song is difficult. I guess the performer must choose between originality or attempting a perfect copy. I appreciate a good performance either way.
I think the Chinese (especially the younger generation) try to copy America and the west in many aspects of culture; clothing, computers, fast food restaurants, supermarkets, transportation, architecture, television, movies and, in this case, music. Whenever I go almost anywhere, it is western music I hear.
It is so prevalent that the government has had to place limits on western culture, for example, only 34 foreign movies a year are allowed in China, and then heavily censored. Even with this limitation, foreign movies still account for over 50% of movie attendance.
It would appear that the younger generation find western culture more desirable.
Covers are good as long as the singer can bring something to make it their own
I love Linkin Park however their version of Adele's rolling in the Deep
was not their best work
bill8899:
Love the guitars but Linkin Park whines about everything. Yes, some bands should not cover songs out of their genre.
Cover bands imitate the originals. How many Elvis impersonators are there. Imitation is the highest form of flattery.
