Does anyone have some suggestions about some exciting day trips I can take from Nanjing. Thanks!

Yangzhou is pretty quick by bus (a bit over an hour), and you can see all kinds of old garden-mansions (including Geyuan, one of the best ones I've seen in China, designed by the great Shitao), a cool but touristy street featuring a bunch of Qing-era buildings, includinging a hard-to-find-but-awesome Daoist temple and a gigantic, cool-looking gate that is the rememnant of the city wall, a really big museum that is surprisingly good quality, which has a huge special thing on the history of the printing press. Shouxihou is the biggest tourist draw, a big Ming-era imperial summer retreat which is essentially miles of well-sculpted gardens and wonderful architecture.

There's also a lot of great modern architecture downtown (a walk down Wenchang lu from one end of the moat to the other is always fun), and a lot of large, modern public parks, including a particularly impressive one right before Wenchang lu hits the grand canal.

kchur:

Also, don't forget to miss the grave of Puhading, on Wenchang Lu to the east of the moat. It's better than I could possibly make it sound, and only 12 kuai, last time I was there.
