Well in some cases they are the same... But thank you for the distinction.
The visa it self yeah, but the trip to Hong Kong to get it was out of my own pocket.
yeah company handled all costs, expensed trip to HK etc. But that was years ago...since then it just gets renewed once a year. I give the lady in HR my passport and then a week later it has a new residence permit.
I don't know what specifically she does with it.
It's illegal if they don't cover the cost of the visa.

Yes, in a contract respecting the rules of the SAFEA the employer must fully cover the cost of the work visa, residence permit and any related costs (e.g. the medical screening).
Also personally I would not sign with a company who is asking me to spend my own money before I even receive my first salary, who do they think they are?

I look about Z cost requirement on Internet, but I couldn't find any info about 'requirement'.
I guess, it's 'School isn't required by Law to cover Z cost', but if stated per Contract.
My last Contract had provision 'I must pay Z visa cost, if I quit Contract before expiration'. I was dismissed (for no valid reason), and I wasn't required to pay any of Z visa cost. Fujian SAFEA was involved too!
For me anything that was done in China was paid for by the company. I did the z- visa back home in the USA once I got the documents from China. That I had to pay for myself.

Strange, I had to get my visa in America also, but my company reimbursed the cost of the visa, and even reimbursed the cost of the multiple bus trips to and from the consulate.

Yup. The company paid.
And....because my contract is in China I even got expenses for my trip back home to get it.
But I was not allowed to claim for beer. The budget is not big enough appparently
company pays 400 rmb twice a year for visa, shandong does not give private schools a year visa anymore in some cities, not sure of the reason, universities still get a year for 400rmb, sometimes they ask me to provide photos and paying for photos is not always paid by the school or reimbursed. the medical is usually paid by the school every 2 years and is usually done at the cheapest place possible, unless the university has their own clinic.
normally most of the employer not pay for the visa for expat, and most of the employeee use one year m entry visa to work in china.
International School in Kaifeng burned my valid RPermit, because at my hiring/Contract sign, School didn't have 'laowai hire authorization'.
They purchased one way ticket to EU, and these days I'm expecting Invitation Letter and Working permit, which I'll use for new Z visa.
As soon as I get Z, School will purchase ticket Lon - Beijing. They'll reimburse me for all Z cost too.
As per Contract, I'll receive 8000 Rmb at the end of the Contract for flying out of China (ticket home or anywhere else I desire). I must submit purchased ticket for refund.
Yes, my company paid for mine. They also paid for my flight to go to America and back to be able to apply for it!
