Q: Do Chinese People Have Common Sense?

Why do they walk on the busy dangerous street, when there is a large, wide empty sidewalk beside them.

They are putting their kids, and themselves at risk, and they are also slowing down traffic. What the hell.

(Yes, I am having one of those days).

Well, since cars and bikes get to ride the sidewalk, what is wrong with them walking on the street?  just remember, here you do as you please, and to hell with the rest !

That is exactly what i do, and have a very happy life.    enlightened

I know what you mean about folks walking in the street, there's usually at least one moment in an average day when i'll find myself saying, in a Crocodile Dundee accent, "Get out the road, dopey!" I think it's just a slightly more laid-back approach to life. And death. I remember being a motorcycle courier in London years back I used to marvel at the amount of people who'd step out in front of me like lemmings. All I could think was 'How are you still alive?' On one occasion a policewoman stepped out from behind a bus while I was talking on my radio and I had to perform a one handed skidding stop. She apologized as I rode on and to this day I regret not having said, "No problem, if i'd known you were a copper, I wouldn't have stopped."

Define racism?

Why? Are you not familiar with the term?

Martian, I sense some irony in your comment. Am I right?

You yourself are also not so friendly:

"I regret not having said, "No problem, if i'd known you were a copper, I wouldn't have stopped.""

I could go on and on about how irrational I find some Chinese thinking and no way to convince them otherwise, like having windows wide open in the winter.

Haha all of those seem to be out of mind but all of them have an explanation according to their common sense.

You forgot drinking hot orange juice in the morning, having pregnant women & also after baby's born not eat icecream, etc, etc, etc.

Yes, they do have common sense. But it is their own version that may only make sense to them, and is only effective in China.

JungleLife:

Perhaps you're defending them a bit, and I agree my post was a bit strong. But no matter what people or where, how is it good sense that works for them when you are walking with your little girl on the busy narrow street, and the empty sidewalk is 3 feet away. If the girl was 6 inches closer to the reckless driver's car she would have got hit. She was holding hands with her Grandpa. If all drivers on the road were safe than it wouldn't be a problem, but some are reckless or not paying attention, therefore we have sidewalks.

Well what confuses me is why you'd think they'd have any reason to follow your sense of logic. You do realize you're in China, right? I'm not defending them, I'm just telling you how they feel. When they are sick, to them, common sense is to drink hot water and wear more clothes. Is that common sense to us? No. By Chinese law, cars have the right of way. Chinese people know that cars will go however they please. Car drivers know they can do whatever they please, so they don't care what you're doing. Therefore it is your responsibility to take care of yourselves and your family. I'm sure that's how they see it.
